Alex Hirsch told Polygon he has no intention of ever making one. He has been saying a version of that for ten years, and the show’s structure is the reason why.
Alex Hirsch has ruled out a third season of Gravity Falls again, this time while promoting a new art book.
“I have no intention to ever create a season three of Gravity Falls,” he told Polygon, alongside supervising producer and story editor Rob Renzetti.
The reasoning has not changed since 2015. Neither has the question.
He has been answering this for a decade
Hirsch said as much directly.
“I’ve been saying, ‘Sorry, show’s over’ for a decade,” he told the outlet, describing conventions, Reddit AMAs and Twitter threads where someone always asks when he is going to answer the question.
The show ended on Feb. 15, 2016, after two seasons of 20 episodes each. It premiered June 15, 2012.
Why two seasons was always the plan
Because the story had an ending built into it.
Hirsch has described the series as a story about one summer, following twins Dipper and Mabel crossing from childhood into early adolescence, their great-uncle finding a long-lost brother, and one central mystery about who wrote the journals.
That mystery got answered. He has argued that the satisfying ending is precisely why people are still discussing the show ten years later, and that adding to it would weaken the structure.
The show was not canceled
In November 2015, Hirsch announced the series would conclude with its second season and said the decision was entirely his. He specified that the show was not being canceled, it was being finished.
Several outlets still describe Gravity Falls as ending prematurely or refer to a cancellation. Neither is accurate.
The finale drew 2.9 million viewers, the highest audience in Disney XD‘s history.
So is the world actually done?
No, and that distinction matters.
Hirsch has kept the story going in print. Gravity Falls: Journal 3 had sold more than 1.3 million copies as of January 2024. Lost Legends followed in 2018, and The Book of Bill arrived in 2024 and landed on bestseller lists.
He told Polygon that the response to The Book of Bill shocked and heartened him, and that he was glad the world had held up.
Disney has also floated interest. In 2024, a Disney television animation executive said the company was in conversations with Hirsch and used the phrase never say never.
What Hirsch has ruled out is a conventional third season. He has not closed the door on everything.
The charity number
The Gravity Falls team raised $266,480 for Los Angeles wildfire relief through a charity stream, an auction and fan contributions.
That figure is a reasonable proxy for why Disney keeps asking. A show that ended a decade ago can still mobilize a quarter of a million dollars from its audience on request.
What is The Art of Gravity Falls?
The book Hirsch and Renzetti were promoting when this came up.
The two covered a wide range of production topics in the interview, which is the closest readers will get to new Gravity Falls material in the near term.
