Narnia is back, and this time it’s got a rock ‘n’ roll streak.
Empire has the first look at Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,” with new images of Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew and Emma Mackey as Jadis, the future White Witch. The magazine’s new issue goes on sale Thursday, Sept. 24.
The movie opens in theaters on Friday, Feb. 12, 2027, with IMAX previews two nights earlier, and it doesn’t land on Netflix until April 2.

What do the Narnia first-look images show?

There’s also concept art by Jaime Jones showing Aslan creating Narnia, according to Dark Horizons.
Gerwig had a great line about Uncle Andrew. She called him “the stupidest magician in the world who actually made magic.”

Streep as Aslan is the big swing. Aslan has always been voiced by a man on screen, most famously Liam Neeson in the Disney-era films. Gerwig told Empire she wanted someone who could be “profound but not pretentious.”
Why is Greta Gerwig’s Narnia a rock opera?
Because of the music in the book.
In “The Magician’s Nephew,” Aslan literally sings Narnia into existence. Gerwig ran with that. “Narnia is literally a world made out of music,” she told Empire, and she said rock ‘n’ roll felt like the right sound for it.
She also moved the story up from the early 1900s, where C.S. Lewis set it, to post-war 1950s Britain, and she’s pointed to David Bowie as an influence. That explains Jadis walking around London dressed like she’s about to headline a stadium show.

That’s a big deal for Netflix. The Playlist says the 45-day theatrical window is something Netflix has never done before. The streamer usually gives its movies a quick, small theatrical run or skips theaters altogether.
What is The Magician’s Nephew about?
It’s the prequel to “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” even though Lewis wrote it later. Two kids, Digory and Polly, get their hands on magic rings made by Digory’s uncle. The rings send them between worlds, and along the way they wake up an evil queen, Jadis, and bring her along by accident.
They end up in an empty, dark world just as Aslan starts singing it to life. That’s how Narnia begins.
It also explains some of the series’ biggest mysteries: where the White Witch came from, how the lamppost ended up in the woods, and why there’s a magic wardrobe in the first place.
Is this the first Narnia movie since Voyage of the Dawn Treader?
Yes. The last Narnia film was “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” in 2010. Disney made the first one, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” in 2005 and “Prince Caspian” in 2008, before Fox took over for the third.
Netflix bought the rights to the whole series in 2018. So by the time this one opens in February, it’ll have been more than 16 years since the last trip through the wardrobe.
