Habit Burger and Grill is giving away about 200,000 free meals through Wed., Nov. 4. The catch is the time, which changes every day. Here’s how to find Habit Hour and claim a box.
Free burgers are out there right now. You just have to be quick, and you have to be in the right place at the right time.
Habit Burger and Grill is running a 10-day giveaway called Habit Hour. It started Monday, Oct. 26, and runs through Wednesday, Nov. 4. The chain says it will hand out roughly 200,000 free meals, worth nearly $2 million, according to its Oct. 22 announcement.
The twist is that Habit Hour isn’t at the same time each day. “Habit Hour happens at a different surprise time each day,” the chain says on its website.
How do you get a free meal during Habit Hour?
Show up in person when Habit Hour starts, and be one of the first 50 guests at the register.
Here are the rules, from Habit’s website and official terms:
The first 50 guests at each participating restaurant get one free Gotta Habit Dipping Trio Box.
It’s one per person.
You have to order in person at the register. Drive-thru, app, online and delivery orders don’t count.
No purchase, coupon or code is needed.
You must be 18 or older and live in the U.S.
Habit Hour ends after 60 minutes or once all 50 meals are gone, “whichever comes first,” per the terms. So if a line forms early, you probably know why.
How do you find out what time Habit Hour starts?
There are two ways, and one gets you a head start.
Habit posts the start time on Instagram, under @habitburgerandgrill, one hour ahead. If you’re a MyHabit rewards member and turn on push notifications in the app, you get an alert about two hours ahead.
You don’t need to join MyHabit to get the free meal. Membership only gets you the earlier heads-up. But an extra hour can be the difference between a free lunch and watching someone else eat it.
What comes in the free Habit meal?
It’s a $10 box, and it’s a full meal.
Habit describes it like this: “Served in Habit’s signature CharBox for one, each box includes a burger cut in half, dipping sauce in the center, five crispy chicken bites, a small side and a regular drink.”
You can pick from three flavors: BBQ, Ranch or Spicy. That’s a solid haul for zero dollars.
Why is Habit Burger giving away free food?
Habit says it’s about kindness. The campaign asks guests to “Pay Good Forward,” which means doing something nice for someone else after getting a free meal.
“We started with a pretty simple idea: what if we just gave people dinner?” said Shannon Hennessy, Habit’s CEO, in the announcement. “Then we started thinking about what happens when one good thing keeps going.”
“We’ll start with 200,000 meals and see how far that good can travel,” Hennessy said.
Is it also great marketing? Sure. Free food gets people in the door, and a lot of folks who show up for the box might come back for a Charburger. Nobody’s complaining.
Which Habit Burger locations are part of the giveaway?
Most of them. Habit says it has more than 385 restaurants in 14 states.
Some spots are left out, though. The announcement says casino, university and airport locations don’t take part. Habit’s terms page lists 15 excluded restaurants by name, including Dodger Stadium, LAX Terminal 6, SDSU and Fashion Show Mall.
Theme park fans, note this one: the Habit at Universal CityWalk is on the excluded list too. So if you were planning a free lunch before a day at Universal, you’ll need to find another location.
Who owns Habit Burger and Grill?
Yum Brands, the company behind Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut. Yum finished buying Habit in March 2020 in a deal worth about $375 million, according to Yum’s announcement at the time.
Habit got its start in Southern California in 1969. It’s best known for its charbroiled Charburger, and it has built a loyal following on the West Coast.
If you’ve got a Habit near you, keep an eye on its socials through Nov. 4. Set an alarm, grab a friend and get in line early. Worst case, you buy a burger anyway, and honestly, that’s not a terrible day either.
