Hayden Panettiere, Disney Actress and Kingdom Hearts' Kairi, dies at 36
Hayden Panettiere has died at 36, her representative confirmed Sunday. She spent her childhood in Disney productions, voicing Dot in A Bug’s Life at nine, starring in Remember the Titans at ten, and voicing Kairi across the Kingdom Hearts games.
Actress Hayden Panettiere has died at 36, her representative confirmed to ABC News on Sunday.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the statement read. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
Details surrounding her death were not immediately available.
She would have turned 37 on August 21.
She voiced Dot in A Bug’s Life at nine years old
Panettiere’s first film role came in 1998, when she voiced Princess Dot in Disney and Pixar’s A Bug’s Life. She was nine.
The performance earned her a Grammy nomination, making her one of the youngest nominees in the award’s history, alongside a Young Artist Award nomination.
By then she had already been working for most of her life. She appeared in a commercial at eleven months old and had run multi-year arcs on the soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light before she reached double digits.
Remember the Titans was her own favorite
Two years later, at ten, she played Sheryl Yoast in Disney’s Remember the Titans, the football coach’s daughter who knew more about the game than most of the adults around her.
She spoke about it warmly for the rest of her career.
“That is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the fact that I got to be a part of it is crazy,” she once said, adding that people usually don’t say that about their own work, and that it remained one of her favorite experiences.
She was the original voice of Kairi
For a generation of players, her most familiar work is a voice.
Panettiere originated Kairi in Kingdom Hearts in 2002, the Disney and Square Enix crossover, and returned for Kingdom Hearts II. Kairi is one of the series’ three central characters, the friend whose loss sets Sora’s entire journey in motion.
Alyson Stoner took the role for Re:Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days, but Panettiere came back to voice Kairi in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, and later voiced Xion in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.
Her run with the character spanned roughly a decade of a franchise Disney now counts among its most valuable.
Her Disney work ran through her whole childhood
The list is longer than most people realize.
She voiced Suri in Disney’s 2000 CGI film Dinosaur, and Yumi in an episode of the Disney Channel series Fillmore!. She played Audrey Davis in Raising Helen in 2004, and starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Tiger Cruise the same year, recording the song “My Hero Is You” for it.
In 2005 she played Gen Harwood in Ice Princess. In 2007 she performed “I Still Believe” for Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.
Years later she returned to Disney-owned television as Juliette Barnes on ABC’s Nashville, a role that earned her two Golden Globe nominations across the show’s run from 2012 to 2018.
Her wider career and recent years
Outside Disney she became best known as Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes, which ran from 2006 to 2010, and as Kirby Reed in the Scream films, a role she returned to in Scream VI in 2023.
She had spoken publicly in recent years about her own struggles, and released a memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, earlier this year. In it she wrote about childhood fame, motherhood, and the death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at 28 from heart complications.
She is survived by her daughter, Kaya.
A child who started working before she could walk, and who spent the years most people spend in grade school voicing a Pixar princess and standing on a Disney football field. Millions of people met her that way and never forgot it.
