HBO's Harry Potter reboot series premieres on Christmas Day
Season 1 adapts the first book and arrives on December 25 on HBO Max. Nicholas Hoult is already cast as Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2, and one Season 1 role has been recast before a single episode has aired.
The Harry Potter television adaptation has a date, and it’s a big one.
HBO‘s series premieres Christmas Day on HBO Max, with Season 1 covering Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Warner Bros. Discovery is giving it a dedicated fan event in London on September 1, tied to the annual Back to Hogwarts celebration. It’s the first major fan-facing event for the show itself after a year of casting news and set photos trickling out.
What’s confirmed about the HBO Harry Potter cast
Season 2 casting is already moving, which tells you how far ahead production is running.
Nicholas Hoult is cast as Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2, which will adapt Chamber of Secrets.
And Gracie Cochrane, cast as Ginny Weasley, is stepping away after Season 1. The role will be recast.
What the HBO series is changing
Details have emerged in pieces rather than in a single reveal.
Production designer commentary has pointed at a different visual approach to Harry’s home life than the films took.
Separately, design materials surfaced at Licensing Expo 2026 included a Quidditch design note that fans have been picking apart.
Neither is a confirmed change to the story. Treat both as glimpses of a production still in progress.
Why the September 1 event matters
Warner has promised announcements at the Back to Hogwarts Showcase, streaming live September 1 on the official Harry Potter YouTube and TikTok channels.
The same week carries the theatrical re-release of all eight original films, running August 27 through September 3, with Regal starting August 25.
Warner is putting the films and the series in front of the same audience in the same fortnight, which is either confidence or a hedge.
