Subway is giving away 5,000 $15 eGift cards, that can go toward a Footlong, to people who confess a “lunchtime horror” online through Oct. 16. We read the fine print on who can enter.
Subway wants to hear about your worst lunch, and it might pay you back in sandwiches.
The chain announced on Monday, Oct. 12, that it’s giving away “thousands” of free Footlongs. To get one, you have to confess a lunch you regret at LunchtimeHorrors.com for a chance to win a $15 Subway eGift card, which Subway says can be used toward a Footlong.
The giveaway runs from noon Eastern on Oct. 12 to 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Friday, Oct. 16.
How do you enter Subway’s free Footlong giveaway?
Go to LunchtimeHorrors.com and share a lunchtime horror story. That’s it.
The fine print in Subway’s announcement lays out the basics:
No purchase necessary.
You have to be 18 or older and live in one of the 50 states or Washington, D.C.
The cards are “available to be won,” so entering doesn’t guarantee you a sandwich.
Subway’s examples of a lunch horror include “the $20 smoothie that left you hungry” and a greasy burger that weighed you down. Basically, any lunch that made you wish you’d gone somewhere else.
The full official rules are posted on the giveaway site, so check them for how winners are picked and notified.
Is the Subway Footlong giveaway legit?
Yes. Subway announced it on PR Newswire and its own newsroom, and the sponsor listed in the fine print is the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust Ltd., based in Shelton, Connecticut.
Stick to LunchtimeHorrors.com, the address in Subway’s announcement. Nation’s Restaurant News noted the site also nudges visitors to join Subway’s rewards program or place an order, which you don’t have to do to enter.
How many free Footlongs is Subway giving away?
The announcement just says “thousands.” The fine print is more specific.
The giveaway is split into five entry periods, with 1,000 eGift cards up for grabs in each one. That’s 5,000 cards in all, worth about $75,000, by our math.
Subway’s announcement doesn’t list each period’s dates. But with five of them, missing Monday doesn’t knock you out.
What is Subway’s Feed Your SUBconscious campaign?
The giveaway is part of Feed Your SUBconscious, an ad campaign starring actor Will Arnett that Subway launched Sept. 21.
Arnett kept his sales pitch short in Subway’s announcement: “I could say more, but ‘free Footlong’ really does most of the work.”
Here’s the campaign’s first ad, which Subway posted Sept. 21:
Subway’s chief marketing officer, Jeff Klein, joked in the announcement that Subway makes sandwiches, not time machines, so it can’t undo your bad lunch. It can only give you a better next one.
What did Subway’s lunch survey find?
Subway paid for a survey to go with the giveaway. Polling firm Big Village asked 1,010 U.S. adults online from Sept. 25 to 28.
Two out of three said they regret their lunch at least sometimes, according to Subway. Their reasons:
35% said they ate something unhealthy.
34% said it didn’t fill them up.
28% said it wasn’t worth the price.
Keep in mind this is a company survey for a company promotion.
What other Subway deals are there right now?
If you don’t win, Subway’s menu page lists a $4.99 Sub of the Day and a $6.99 Meal of the Day.
Subway’s Fresh Value Menu, launched in April, also has $3.99 Deli Faves 6-inch subs and $3.99 Protein Pockets. You can upgrade a 6-inch Sub of the Day to a Footlong for $3 more. Prices are higher in California, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii, Subway says.
Two limited-time deals run through Oct. 26: the Hot Honey sandwich lineup, with $4.99 chicken or cheese Doritos Hot Honey Nachos, and ARC Raiders video game codes with a qualifying meal.
Has Subway given away free sandwiches before?
Plenty of times. A few, from Subway’s own announcements:
July 2021: up to 1 million free subs in one day.
July 2022: up to 1 million more, to launch the Subway Series menu.
November 2022: 10,000 Footlong eGift cards for air travelers stuck in middle seats.
January 2026: 737 gift cards worth $20 each, again for middle-seat flyers.
So if you’ve got a horror story about a middle seat, Subway might want to hear that one, too.
Whatever happened to the $5 Footlong?
It started as a chainwide deal in 2008, Fortune reported, and came back in 2020 as $5 Footlongs when you ordered two.
Today’s $15 prize card is three times that old price. Subway doesn’t publish a national Footlong price, and prices vary by location.
What are some fun facts about Subway?
It has a new owner. Private equity firm Roark Capital finished buying Subway on April 30, 2024.
It’s shrinking in the U.S. Subway closed a net 729 U.S. locations in 2025 and ended the year with fewer than 19,000, FOX Business reported in May, citing a franchise filing.
Subway stopped giving a number. Its press releases described “nearly 37,000” restaurants worldwide in January. Since late September, they just say “thousands.”
It’s a Halloween promo, too. The banner art is a graveyard, and Subway tells people to “let the skeletons out of your lunchbox.”
The site’s name doesn’t quite match the ads. The banner says “Lunchtime Horror Stories,” but the website is LunchtimeHorrors.com.
Got a sad desk salad in your past? Now it might be worth something.
