The eight-episode series lands Oct. 14 on Disney+ with Paul Bettany and a returning James Spader. Marvel now calls it the finale of a trilogy, though it never sold the first two that way.
VisionQuest premieres Wednesday, Oct. 14 on Disney+, with Paul Bettany back as Vision and James Spader returning as Ultron for the first time since 2015.
Marvel is framing it as the conclusion of a trilogy that started with WandaVision in 2021 and continued through Agatha All Along in 2024.
Neither of those was marketed as part of a set at the time. The trilogy label arrived retroactively, once VisionQuest was announced.
But given that this show and Agatha All Along involve he and Wanda’s sons, that is the connection making it a trilogy.
Billy was featured in Agatha All Along, and Tommy will be in VisionQuest.
What is VisionQuest about?
A rebooted android in hiding, with a price on his head.
Vision escaped the people who wanted to weaponize him after WandaVision’s finale and has been living quietly. The trailer opens with him working a pub, closing up for the night, staring at “W+V” carved into the bar.
“I was a different person back then,” he says.
That ends when a bounty goes out on him. The official setup has Vision forced into real connections and found family in order to survive, which is a fairly direct thesis statement for a character built out of borrowed memories.
James Spader is back, and not just as a robot
Spader returns as Ultron, appearing both in robot form and, per footage shown at the event, in human form inside Vision’s mind. He last played the character in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Ultron created Vision’s body. The father and son framing is the show’s engine.
Who else is in the VisionQuest cast?
A lot of artificial intelligences with familiar names.
James D’Arcy returns as the original Jarvis. Emily Hampshire plays E.D.I.T.H., Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., Henry Lewis plays D.U.M.-E and Jonathan Sayer joins as another AI persona.
T’Nia Miller plays Jocasta. Todd Stashwick plays Paladin. And Ruaridh Mollica plays Tommy Maximoff.
That last one completes a pattern. WandaVision introduced Billy and Tommy, Agatha All Along built its season around Billy, and now Tommy gets his turn. The trilogy framing looks more deliberate once you line the kids up.
Who is running VisionQuest?
Terry Matalas, who ran Star Trek: Picard.
Bettany has talked publicly about why that pairing worked. “Marvel gets rewarded when it takes really big swings,” he said, describing Matalas as someone who understood Vision as a character for people who never felt like they fit anywhere.
Directing duties are split between Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali and Matalas.
How many episodes, and how do they drop?
Eight.
One outlet has reported all eight arriving on Oct. 14 at once, which would break from Marvel’s weekly pattern on Disney+. Marvel has not confirmed the release cadence publicly, so treat a full-season drop as unconfirmed rather than expected.
VisionQuest is also the last Marvel television series of 2026.
Why does this matter for the MCU?
We don’t know.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in December, and whether anything in VisionQuest connects to it has not been addressed. Marvel has kept its television and film threads loosely tied lately.
Bettany joked on the D23 stage about how often his character has died, noting that dying several times makes long-term financial planning difficult. He has played Vision since 2015, watched him get killed by Thanos, resurrected by Wanda, and rebooted into the white version this show follows.
For a synthetic being who has been assembled, destroyed and rebuilt more times than most MCU characters have appeared, an identity crisis seems like the only honest place to land.
