Johnny Depp says he wants to give Jack Sparrow a better goodbye, and he’d work with Jerry Bruckheimer “tomorrow.” So where does Pirates 6 stand at Disney right now?
Johnny Depp hasn’t said yes to Pirates of the Caribbean 6. But he’s sounding a lot more open to it than he used to.
Depp talked about a possible return as Captain Jack Sparrow in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, while promoting his new Christmas movie, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. Variety wrote up his comments on Monday, Nov. 2.
He didn’t confirm anything. What he did do is give a pretty clear reason he’d come back.
What did Johnny Depp say about Pirates of the Caribbean 6?
Depp told ET that “the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note,” according to Variety.
In other words, he isn’t chasing a whole new run of Jack Sparrow movies. He wants the character’s last chapter to land better than the last one did.
He also had kind words for longtime Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “I will go to work with [Jerry] Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything,” Depp said, per Variety.
That’s a big shift in tone for a star who’s been out of the franchise for nearly a decade.
Is Pirates of the Caribbean 6 actually happening?
Disney hasn’t announced a cast, a script or a release date. So, officially, there’s no Pirates 6 on the calendar yet.
Bruckheimer keeps saying it’s in the works, though. At D23 in August, he said, “we’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done,” according to Deadline via Laughing Place.
Deadline’s sources also said the new film is built around a new lead played by Margot Robbie. Disney hasn’t confirmed that.
Bruckheimer has said much the same thing for a while. In the summer of 2025, he told Entertainment Weekly this about Depp: “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it.”
Back in 2024, he called the project a reboot but said that if it were up to him, Depp would be in it. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the last Pirates movie, was attached to write at that point, Variety reported.
Why did Johnny Depp leave the Pirates movies?
Depp last played Jack Sparrow in Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017. That movie made about $795 million worldwide, according to The Numbers. It was a hit, but it earned less than the three movies right before it.
In late 2018, reports said Disney was moving on from Depp and planning a reboot with new writers. Depp then spent years in very public legal fights tied to his personal life.
That’s a big reason why “Depp back on the Black Pearl” has felt like a long shot for years. Now the two sides are talking again, and Bruckheimer clearly wants him there.
The five Pirates movies have pulled in about $4.5 billion worldwide combined, per The Numbers. Disney has plenty of reasons to want this ship sailing again.
What is Johnny Depp’s new movie Ebenezer about?
Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol is Paramount’s new take on the Charles Dickens story. Depp plays Ebenezer Scrooge.
Ti West directs, from a script by Nathaniel Halpern. The cast is stacked: Ian McKellen plays Jacob Marley, Rupert Grint plays Bob Cratchit, and Daisy Ridley is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
Andrea Riseborough plays the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Tramell Tillman plays the Ghost of Christmas Present. Sam Claflin plays Scrooge’s nephew, Fred.
The movie opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, Nov. 13.
Where can Disney fans find Jack Sparrow right now?
If you can’t wait for a sixth movie, Jack still shows up in the parks. The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom both added Jack Sparrow scenes back in 2006, after the first movies took off.
Whether Depp makes it back to the big screen depends on one thing he’s been clear about: the script. Bruckheimer says they’re working on it.
For now, Pirates fans have something they haven’t had in a long time. Jack Sparrow himself is saying he’d like one more voyage, as long as it ends on the right note.
