Yum Brands cut ties with franchisee Encanto Restaurants, shutting 83 KFCs and 38 Taco Bells and costing nearly 2,000 jobs, El Vocero reported. A day later, 56 Pizza Huts run by the same company closed too.
Every KFC and Taco Bell in Puerto Rico closed Monday, Nov. 2, after parent company Yum Brands ended its relationship with the island's franchisee, Encanto Restaurants. A day later, 56 Pizza Hut restaurants run by Encanto closed too, El Vocero reported.
The first wave covers 83 KFCs and 38 Taco Bells, El Vocero reported, and nearly 2,000 workers lost their jobs. The Pizza Hut closures affect about 700 more. Puerto Rico's Department of Labor puts the preliminary total near 2,700, Primera Hora reported Wednesday.
Yum said Encanto "can no longer operate in a way that meets our standards." The company said it remains committed to Puerto Rico and is looking for a new franchise partner to reopen "as quickly as possible." It hasn't given a date.
Employees found out at work. Staff arrived Monday to empty display cases, missing menu items and dark dining rooms, El Vocero reported. One former employee, Dayanne Martinez, wrote on Encanto's Facebook page that workers deserved clear communication.
Encanto hasn't made a public statement. Primera Hora reported the company posted human resources phone numbers on Facebook late Tuesday and limited comments on the post.
Why did KFC and Taco Bell close in Puerto Rico?
Yum hasn't said which standards Encanto missed. But signs of trouble showed up weeks earlier.
El Vocero reported Oct. 22 that Encanto could change owners amid lawsuits over unpaid debts. Through July, the company had more than 70 court cases, mostly evictions and debt collection, totaling about $4.1 million, according to the Boletin de Puerto Rico.
Employees told El Vocero that some restaurants ran short on supplies and went months without air conditioning because suppliers weren't paid.
Encanto runs about 180 restaurants on the island and employs more than 3,000 people, the Associated Press reported. The wider industry is under strain, too. El Nuevo Dia reported that one in three Puerto Rico restaurants is considering closing, citing a Puerto Rico Restaurant Association study. Rising electricity costs topped operators' worries.
Is Pizza Hut closed in Puerto Rico too?
Yes, for now. El Vocero reported Encanto's 56 Pizza Hut locations closed temporarily on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Pizza Hut is also a Yum brand, but neither Yum nor Encanto has said why those stores closed or for how long.
IHOP, Encanto's fourth brand, is still open. Staff told El Vocero business has dropped anyway because customers assume it closed, too. All told, about 177 Encanto restaurants are closed.
Who will take over KFC and Taco Bell in Puerto Rico?
Nobody yet. El Vocero first reported that Grupo Serrano, an Ecuador-based company and one of the largest KFC franchisees in Latin America, was the leading candidate. A later El Vocero report, citing industry sources, said those talks failed and other local operators have shown interest. There's no deal and no timeline.
KFC told customers on Instagram, "We hope to be able to serve you again very soon."
What help is available for KFC and Taco Bell workers?
Gov. Jenniffer Gonzalez Colon said the closures took everyone by surprise and called the chains part of the island's culture, El Nuevo Dia reported. She directed the Labor Department to help workers find new jobs and federal aid.
Economic Development Secretary Carlos Rios Pierluisi said the abrupt closure violated a federal law that requires companies to notify the government before shutting down. His department got no advance notice, El Nuevo Dia reported.
Here's what the government is offering:
Unemployment: File a claim at desempleo.trabajo.pr.gov or call 787-754-7300.
Job sessions: The first is Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Palacio de Recreacion y Deportes in Mayaguez. A San Juan session follows later that week. Both offer job leads, resume help, unemployment filing and answers about wages, vacation and the Christmas bonus.
Local offices: Employment Service offices around the island, from Arecibo to Ponce, can help now.
Other chains are hiring. McDonald's and Burger King have announced hundreds of openings, El Nuevo Dia reported.
How long has KFC been in Puerto Rico?
The island's first KFC opened in 1967, 59 years ago. Encanto has run Taco Bell there since 1985, the AP reported.
Yum calls the KFC and Taco Bell closures temporary. Until a new operator signs on, IHOP is the only one of Encanto's four chains still serving customers.
