Korean lifestyle retailer Artbox, known for cute stationery and character goods, is planning permanent U.S. stores after a Los Angeles pop-up, starting on the West Coast.
A favorite stop for shoppers in Korea could be coming to a mall near you.
Artbox, a Korean lifestyle store known for cute stationery, character goods, and gifts, has hired real estate firm CBRE to help it expand in the U.S., with a focus on the West Coast, according to Chain Store Age.
The move follows Artbox’s first U.S. pop-up shop in Los Angeles earlier this month.
What is Artbox?
A South Korean store that sells a little bit of everything. Artbox carries more than 20,000 products across eight categories, including character goods, stationery, home goods, beauty, fashion, gifts, phone accessories, and snacks, according to FashionUnited.
It started in Seoul in 1984 as a stationery business.
How many Artbox stores are there?
Artbox runs 222 stores in South Korea, according to FashionUnited. It has also had a store in Vancouver, Canada, which opened in 2023, according to Wikipedia.
Where will Artbox open U.S. stores?
The West Coast first. Southern California is Artbox’s main test market for a wider U.S. rollout, FashionUnited reported.
Artbox says it is looking for long-term store locations with U.S. landlords and developers. It hasn’t announced specific cities, malls or opening dates.
What was the Artbox Los Angeles pop-up?
Artbox’s first directly run U.S. store. The temporary shop opened Oct. 3 on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles and ran through Oct. 11, according to a company press release.
The pop-up had five zones, including oversized characters, a K-culture photo area, a DIY customization corner and a gacha capsule machine experience. A visit took about 40 to 45 minutes.
What is a gacha machine?
A capsule toy vending machine. You put in money, turn a crank and get a random toy or charm inside a plastic ball.
Gacha machines started in Japan and have become a big hit in U.S. malls and stores, especially with collectors and fans of blind box toys.
Who is the Artbox brand ambassador?
K-pop group ILLIT. Members Yunah, Minju, Wonhee and Iroha attended the pop-up’s opening day in Los Angeles, according to Artbox.
What did Artbox say about coming to the U.S.?
Kevin Cho, head of global business at Artbox, said “Los Angeles is a natural starting point for Artbox’s U.S. journey.”
He called the pop-up an “exciting first step“ toward a permanent store in North America.
What characters does Artbox sell?
Artbox has its own original characters, including Lazywag, according to FashionUnited. Like many Korean and Japanese stores, it is known for cute designs on everything from notebooks to plush toys.
Is Artbox like Daiso or Miniso?
In some ways. Like Japan’s Daiso and China’s Miniso, Artbox sells affordable everyday items and fun gifts in one shop.
Artbox leans more into Korean design, character goods and K-culture, which could help it stand out with fans of K-pop and Korean beauty.
Why are Korean stores expanding in the U.S.?
K-culture is booming. K-pop, Korean dramas, Korean beauty products and Korean snacks have all grown hugely popular in the U.S. in recent years.
Hits like Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters have brought even more fans into Korean pop culture. That gives stores like Artbox a ready-made audience.
When will Artbox open in the U.S.?
Artbox hasn’t announced a date. The company is still using what it learned from the Los Angeles pop-up to pick locations, FashionUnited reported.
Shoppers outside California may have to wait longer, since the West Coast is the first target.
