The most-watched film in Netflix history held the chart for more than a year. It exited at No. 8, sitting between 13 Minutes and Shrek, which is a fitting way to go.
KPop Demon Hunters has dropped off Netflix’s official Top 10 after 63 consecutive weeks.
That is the first time a Netflix film has held the chart for a full year, and it ended quietly. The movie spent its last week in eighth place, wedged between 13 Minutes and Shrek.
Sixty-three weeks works out to about 14 and a half months, from a June 2025 debut through this September.
How big did KPop Demon Hunters actually get?
Bigger than anything Netflix has put out.
The film has drawn more than 540 million views, which makes it the most-watched movie in the streamer’s history. The runner-up, 2021’s Red Notice, sits around 230 million.
That is not a close race. It is more than double.
The soundtrack has been streamed roughly 11 billion times, with four songs landing on the Billboard Hot 100.
It also went to theaters and won
Netflix ran a sing-along version theatrically in fall 2025, and it worked better than anyone expected.
The film became the first Netflix movie to hit No. 1 at the domestic box office, taking $19 million across two days in late August 2025 and finishing near $25 million domestically.
For a movie that had already been streaming free to subscribers for two months, that is a strange and impressive number.
On the awards side, it went 10 for 10 at the Annie Awards, won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, and took home the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.”
What is KPop Demon Hunters about?
A girl group that fights demons between shows.
Huntr/x is made up of Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo). Their singing sustains a magical barrier called the Honmoon that keeps demons out of the human world.
Demon king Gwi-Ma, voiced by Lee Byung-hun, backs a plan from Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop) to build a rival demon boy band, the Saja Boys, and turn the fandom against Huntr/x.
The singing voices come from Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, which is part of why the soundtrack performed like an actual K-pop release rather than a film score.
When is the KPop Demon Hunters sequel coming?
Not soon. 2029 is the target.
Netflix confirmed the sequel in March, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning to write and direct. Sony Pictures Animation, which produced the original, is back as well.
The sequel is the first project under Kang and Appelhans’s exclusive multi-year animation deal with Netflix.
“There’s so much more to this world we have built,” Kang said at the time.
Why the long gap?
Animation takes a while.
A 2029 release puts roughly four years between the original’s chart exit and the follow-up. Netflix has also floated a potential world tour tied to the property, though nothing has been confirmed on that front.
In the meantime, the franchise has been kept alive through merchandise, a physical media release and a soundtrack that refuses to leave streaming charts.
Dropping out of the Top 10 after a year is not a decline. It is a movie finally being allowed to sit down.
