"Lilo & Stitch" Blows "Snow White" Box Office Away In Opening Weekend
“Lilo & Stitch” just did more in its opening weekend than “Snow White” made in it’s entire box office run!
It seems “Lilo & Stitch” will be another box office hit for the Walt Disney Company. It’s estimated to bring in almost $342 million globally in the opening weekend. Domestically, it is set to bring in $183 million.
For comparison, “Snow White” brought in about $205 million globally. This was after weeks in theaters and a “re-release” for Mother’s Day weekend. “Lilo & Stitch” brought almost as much domestically at opening as the Rachel Zegler-led flop did in weeks.
To top all that, “Lilo & Stitch” landed the title of the biggest Memorial Day weekend opening ever (not adjusted for inflation), beating out Top Gun: Maverick at $160 million.
“Lilo & Stitch” far exceeded expectations.
The new Disney live-action remake far exceeded expectations for its debut. Originally, it was set to make $120 million. Later, they raised it to $165 million, and it still exceeded those numbers to hit about $183 million.
Families and women were the biggest audience for this film. My kids are both huge “Lilo & Stitch” fans. My son even dressed as Stitch twice for Halloween, requiring me to buy two different-sized costumes. He loved it!
It seems my kids aren’t alone. Gen Z and late Millennials flocked to theaters to see their favorite experiment in live action. Many who loved Stitch as children took their children to see the film.
Audiences are loving this film.
While the critical score on Rotten Tomatoes has dropped to 69% the audience score is high at 94%!
The main issue anyone seems to have with this film is the ending. If you want to know more you can read my review here.
We weren’t thrilled with no Gantu and Jumba being so different, but overall it was still a good film. I gave it a 7.5 out of 10. It would have been 8.5 had it not been for Jumba.
I am interested to see how high the box office goes. In three weeks, the live-action “How To Train Your Dragon” film is set to open, and I think it has a great shot at doing as well or better than “Lilo & Stitch.” Until then, Experiment 626 will likely dominate the box office.
Let’s hope Disney doesn’t take this as a sign to do more live-action remakes. For ever “Lilo & Stitch” we have a “Snow White” or “Dumbo.” Disney needs to move on and go back to making new things.
