Lilo & Stitch Box Office Tracking Has It Making At Least $120 Million At Opening
Early box office estimates for the live-action Lilo & Stitch are starting to appear. The highly anticipated film may be Disney’s best shot at a remake this year after “Snow White” didn’t even make $97 million domestically and only hit $200 million globally.
Now, estimates suggest “Lilo & Stitch” will make more in its domestic opening weekend than “Snow White” made for its entire domestic run.
What is the domestic estimate for “Lilo & Stitch”
Current domestic box office predictions vary, but $120 million is one number that is seen repeatedly.
Box Office Pro believes the film will likely open to $120-$140 million for three days and $135 -$165 million for the four-day Memorial Day weekend.
The National Research Group indicates $110-$130 million for the opening weekend.
THR stuck to the middle with $120 million as their estimate.
I am inclined to lean towards a higher number with the excitement for this film and the demand for quality family entertainment.
“A Minecraft Movie” did incredibly well in this demographic. However, it went viral on social media, leading to the “Chicken Jockey” phenomenon. I do not believe “Lilo & Stitch” will perform as well, but I think it can do at least $120 million domestically.
What could cause it to fail?
I do not think this film will flop on opening weekend like “Snow White.” If it does fail, it would likely be due to two reasons.
People are over Disney live-action remakes.
Disney fans are getting tired of their constant reimaginings and remakes. Many feel it’s getting old and lazy, and they want something new.Potential viewers will wait for Disney+.
Fans have gotten used to waiting for films to come to Disney+. During the pandemic, Disney set a precedent of putting the films onto streaming quickly. It trained to audience not to go to the theater. In the current economy, people may wait to save money.
How much does “Lilo & Stitch” need to break even?
Unlike “Snow White,” the budget for “Lilo & Stitch” is far more reasonable at $100 million. Break-even for the film should be between $200-$250 million, and it could potentially bring that in its first weekend at the global box office.
Given the excitement around this film, it is unlikely to flop. I’m hoping that if it does succeed, Disney doesn’t decide to double down on the remakes again. After “Snow White” failed, the Walt Disney Company was reportedly shutting down many of the live-action remakes in production.
I don’t think there is demand.
