The baby elephant animatronic from Kilimanjaro Safaris’ old poacher storyline is on view again at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, 14 years after Disney pulled it from the ride.
One of Disney’s most famous missing props has turned up again.
Little Red, the baby elephant Audio-Animatronic that starred in the original Kilimanjaro Safaris storyline, is back where guests can see it at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, WDW News Today confirmed with photos Tuesday.
It’s been out of sight for about 14 years.
Where is Little Red at Animal Kingdom?
Little Red sits at the back of the second elephant yard, in a backstage area of the park.
That means you can’t spot it from the safari trucks. The only way to see it is on the Caring for Giants tour, WDW News Today and WDWMagic reported.
What is the Caring for Giants tour?
It’s a 60-minute guided tour focused on Animal Kingdom’s African elephant herd. A guide walks you to a viewing area where you watch the elephants from about 100 feet away while animal care staff talk about them.

Ages 4 and up, and anyone under 18 needs an adult
Park admission is required and is not included

It runs outdoors a few times a day, so it can be affected by weather.
What was the Kilimanjaro Safaris poacher story?
When Kilimanjaro Safaris opened on April 22, 1998, it had a whole plot.
Your truck driver got a radio call about poachers in the reserve. They’d taken a mother elephant named Big Red and her calf, Little Red. The ride ended with a bumpy chase and a rescue, and you’d see Little Red at the end, safe.
Why did Disney remove the poacher storyline?
Disney softened it over the years, then cut it. In February 2012, the company announced that the Little Red scene would be replaced with a zebra habitat, which opened that fall.
The animatronic went backstage, and by 2013 it was parked out of sight near a cast services building behind Pride Rock. That’s where it sat for more than a decade.
Did Kilimanjaro Safaris have a darker ending?
It did, and it never made it to opening day.
During early previews, the ride ended with guests finding Big Red dead, with the poachers getting away. It was considered too upsetting for a family attraction, so Disney changed the ending to a rescue before the park opened.
Not exactly a Disney ending.
Has Disney said anything about Little Red’s return?
No. Disney hasn’t made any announcement, and the animatronic simply showed up where tour guests could see it.
Fan sites first spotted it back in April, and Tuesday’s photos confirmed it’s still there.
Is Little Red going back on Kilimanjaro Safaris?
Nothing suggests that. The zebra habitat that replaced the scene is still part of the ride, and Disney hasn’t said anything about bringing the storyline back.
For now, this is a backstage display, and a nice surprise for anyone who takes the tour.
What else is happening with elephants at Disney World?
Tuesday is Elephant Appreciation Day, which is timely.
Animal Kingdom’s herd includes elephants that have lived at the park for years, and Disney’s conservation arm supports elephant protection work in Africa, including a conservancy in Kenya that helps keep a wildlife corridor open.
So if you’ve ever wondered what happened to that baby elephant from 1998, the answer is that he’s been around this whole time. He just needed a better parking spot.
