Lowe’s launched drone delivery at a single store in Matthews, N.C., with orders arriving in as little as 20 minutes. The drones carry about 2.5 pounds, which rules out most of what a home improvement store sells.

The company launched the pilot Sept. 24 at one store in Matthews, North Carolina, just outside Charlotte. Orders arrive in as fast as 20 minutes.
Lowe’s says it’s the first home improvement retailer to offer it.
There’s a catch, and it’s a weight limit.
The drones carry about 2.5 pounds
That’s the number in the fine print, and it shapes everything.
Wing drones handling these deliveries transport roughly 2.5 pounds per flight. For most retailers that’s workable. For a store that sells lumber, concrete and appliances, it’s a narrow window.
A gallon of paint weighs around 11 pounds. A bag of concrete mix runs 50 pounds or more. Even a cordless drill with a battery pack usually clears 3 pounds.
So the drone is not bringing you those things.
What you can actually order
Lowe’s was fairly upfront about the list.
The pilot covers a curated set of eligible products, including hand tools and paint products, plus everyday household items. The examples the company gave:
Soap
Tape
All-purpose cleaner
Batteries
That’s the real use case. You’re mid-project, you run out of painter’s tape, and instead of losing 40 minutes to a store run you get it dropped in your yard.
Lowe’s frames it around exactly that problem. As chief information and AI officer Seemantini Godbole put it, the goal is “removing friction from home improvement.”
For small forgotten items, it genuinely solves something. For anything heavier, you’re still driving.
One store out of more than 1,750
Worth keeping the scale straight.
Lowe’s operates more than 1,750 stores across the country. This pilot runs at one of them.
The eligible delivery zone covers addresses near that Matthews location. Everyone else gets the same fulfillment options as before.
Lowe’s didn’t build the drone network
This is the part the headline glosses over.
The drones belong to Wing. The orders come through the DoorDash app. Wing and DoorDash already ran drone delivery in the Charlotte area before Lowe’s showed up.
Lowe’s joined an existing service. The company’s own release says the launch “builds on Wing and DoorDash’s existing drone delivery operations in the Charlotte area, adding Lowe’s to the growing list of brands now available for delivery via drone.”
That makes the “first home improvement retailer” claim accurate but modest. Lowe’s is first to sign up in its category, not first to build anything.
How to use it
The process runs entirely through DoorDash.
Open the DoorDash app. Drone delivery appears automatically if your address is eligible.
Select the “Lowe’s by Drone” storefront.
Fill your cart with eligible items and check out normally.
Lowe’s has not announced what drone delivery costs, or whether it carries a fee beyond standard DoorDash charges.
Charlotte is home turf
The location isn’t random.
Lowe’s is headquartered in Mooresville, North Carolina, about 30 miles from Matthews. Both sit in the Charlotte metro area.
Godbole described the pilot as giving “our hometown customers next-generation fulfillment.” Testing in your own backyard means executives can drive out and watch it work.
It fits a bigger tech push
Lowe’s has been leaning into technology across the business.
The company launched Mylow, an AI assistant for customers, and Mylow Companion for store associates, in 2025. Lowe’s says the two have answered more than 25 million questions since.
Drone delivery is the physical version of the same idea.
What Lowe’s hasn’t said
Several things remain open.
There’s no announced timeline for expanding beyond Matthews, no list of additional markets, no full catalog of eligible products and no pricing detail.
The company also hasn’t said how long the pilot runs or what would trigger a wider rollout.
For now it’s one store, one suburb and 2.5 pounds at a time. Which is a real service, as long as what you forgot was the tape.
