The M3GAN movie that never made it to theaters is headed to Hulu.
SOULM8TE starts streaming Thursday, Oct. 1, and it’s the first title in Hulu’s Huluween lineup for 2026. Hulu announced the date Sept. 22.
That’s a strange landing spot for a Universal and Blumhouse movie. Hulu belongs to Disney. But this one has been bouncing around for a while.
What is SOULM8TE about?
A grieving engineer, a very expensive robot, and a bad idea.
Per Hulu’s description, an engineer is hired to test a tech company’s new android. He tries to program her into a truly sentient soulmate, and she ends up with needs of her own. From there it turns into what Hulu calls a “relentless spree of precision-engineered mayhem.”
Horror site Fangoria summed it up as Fatal Attraction with robots, which is probably the fastest way to explain it.

Who directed SOULM8TE?
Kate Dolan, who made the Irish horror film You Are Not My Mother. She co-wrote the script with Rafael Jordan.
Blumhouse and Atomic Monster produced it, the same team behind both M3GAN movies.
Why didn’t SOULM8TE come out in theaters?
Because M3GAN 2.0 didn’t do what the first one did.
The original M3GAN was a surprise hit in early 2023, pulling in close to $200 million worldwide on a budget of about $12 million, per Fangoria. The sequel opened in summer 2025 and fell well short of that.
SOULM8TE had a January 2026 theatrical date. In December 2025, Universal dropped it from the release calendar, and Deadline reported the studio was shopping it to other buyers.
It ended up going straight to digital rental and purchase this summer instead.
Is SOULM8TE rated R?
Yes. ScreenRant reported it’s the first movie in the M3GAN franchise to get an R rating. Both M3GAN films were PG-13.
That lines up with the premise. A robot built to be someone’s partner is a very different movie from a robot built to be a kid’s best friend.
Is SOULM8TE any good?
Reviews have been kinder than the release history would suggest. Laughing Place pointed to critics calling it “unnerving, sexy, suspenseful, and darkly compelling.”
It also got a real festival premiere before the digital release. Fangoria reported it screened first at GAZE, the Dublin LGBTQ+ film festival. That is a much smaller stage than the January wide release Universal once planned.
That’s a long way from a movie nobody wanted to release. But timing counts for a lot in horror, and this one showed up right after its big sister stumbled.
What else is on Huluween 2026?
SOULM8TE kicks it off, and the rest of October follows. Hulu has already announced Clown Panic, a documentary about the 2016 wave of creepy clown sightings, as part of the lineup.
