New aerials show a tower crane over Piston Peak, mature trees from the Rivers of America in storage waiting to be replanted, and a construction zone that now runs deep into backstage.
The construction site for Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land has grown past the point where it fits in a single photo.
Aerial photographer bioreconstruct posted new images this weekend showing the zone stretching from the former Rivers of America out into Magic Kingdom’s backstage areas. It is the largest expansion in the park’s history, and the pictures make that claim look modest.
What is being built at Piston Peak National Park?
Two attractions. Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along.
The land takes the Cars universe into the American West, built around real national park scenery with forests, waterways, geysers and mountains.
A tower crane went up recently near the center of the site, which is the clearest sign yet of vertical construction starting. Crews are excavating and pouring foundations around it, with the heaviest work near The Haunted Mansion and the former Liberty Square Riverboat landing.
Is the Rivers of America water coming back?
In a different shape, yes.
A new waterway is expected to separate parts of Piston Peak from Liberty Square and Frontierland, which preserves a waterfront edge even though the Rivers of America itself is gone. Tom Sawyer Island and the river have been almost entirely replaced by graded land, excavated pits and temporary roads.
Near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, crews are working along the coaster’s new visual barrier, with excavation and utility work now surrounding most of its outer perimeter.
What happened to the trees from the Rivers of America?
They are sitting in a staging area, waiting.
Several mature trees transplanted out of the old Rivers of America landscape are being stored at the upper edge of the construction zone, beside the show buildings for The Haunted Mansion and “it’s a small world.” They may be replanted throughout Piston Peak once the land takes shape.
Saving full-grown trees is slow and expensive, which is usually a sign somebody intends to use them. A new land with instant mature landscaping looks decades older than it is.
What is the mystery space at the edge of the site?
A large staging area that bioreconstruct suggested could eventually serve as an expansion pad.
Disney has not confirmed any long-term purpose for it, and there is a meaningful difference between a space that could hold a future project and a space that will. For now it holds construction materials and trees.
What else is changing around Magic Kingdom?
Three things outside the park turned up in the same photos.
A fireworks launch location lined up with Cinderella Castle. A new office building going up near Adventureland. And a new routing of Floridian Way, the road that carries traffic through the resort.
There is also a piece of park history visible in one frame. Near the point where the Rivers of America met Magic Kingdom’s service canal, an old backstage dock still remains. Magic Kingdom originally ran two steamboats, and that dock is where one of them sat on days when attendance did not justify running both.
That land is now inside the Villains Land development area, where earthmoving and utility work are still the main activity.
Disney has not given an opening date for either land. Piston Peak was announced as part of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, and the current state of the site, foundations and infrastructure rather than buildings, puts the finish line a long way out.
