Balloon tests over the Villains Land construction site suggest the fortress will be visible from Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. An Imagineer says they already lowered the designs once.
Disney sent balloons up over the Magic Kingdom dirt pit, and the results say a lot about what is coming.
One marks the high point of Maleficent’s fortress in Villains Land. Another marks the mountain in Piston Peak National Park.
Both are going to be tall enough to change the park’s skyline.
How tall will Maleficent’s fortress be?
Close to the ceiling, if the balloon tests hold.
Disney caps any themed element in its parks at 200 feet. Coverage of the tests suggests the fortress will push that limit.
The balloons sat noticeably higher than the nearby Haunted Mansion and the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad range.
The fortress serves as the high point of the roller coaster theming running through Villains Land, which puts the tallest piece of the land at its center.
Where will you be able to see it from?
Across most of the park.
Balloon test observations suggest the fortress will be visible from Fantasyland near Mickey’s PhilharMagic and from Tomorrowland near the Tomorrowland Launch Depot.
Those are just the confirmed sightlines. If the final height lands where the balloons did, it will be visible from considerably more.
Did Disney lower the designs?
Yes, and an Imagineer said so on camera.
Chelsea Whikehart, a Walt Disney Imagineering senior producer on Piston Peak, addressed it in a video published on the Imagineering YouTube channel.
“It’s important to us that this fits into the skyline of the Magic Kingdom, so from any angle, this looks perfect,” she said.
She explained that a balloon test a year earlier showed some elevations were too high. The team went back, reworked the designs, and reevaluated.
“When we reevaluated this balloon test, we realized we were right on the money.”
The change shows up in the concept art. The 2024 version put the Piston Peak mountain rising higher into the air. The 2026 version keeps a large mountain but relocates the rock formation that had been the highest point.
How big is Villains Land?
Disney gave a comparison that lands immediately.
Walt Disney World said Villains Land alone is on the scale of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
That is before counting Piston Peak, which takes up roughly half of the same construction footprint.
The combined site is the enormous dirt pit now visible from the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad queue, though Disney has installed paneled walls that block much of the view.
What attractions are going in Villains Land?
Two major ones, plus dining and shopping.
The first is a roller coaster where riders come face to face with Maleficent herself, racing through enchanted briar surrounding her mountaintop fortress.
The second is the Magic Mirror dark ride.
Several other attractions have been reported without confirmation, including a family coaster tied to “The Emperor’s New Groove” and a possible Hades dinner show. Disney has not announced any of that, so treat it as rumor.
What is Piston Peak National Park?
A Cars-themed land replacing a large section of Frontierland.
It arrives following the permanent closures of the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat.
Permit filings point to two attractions: a flat ride similar in footprint to Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, and a larger multi-story indoor-outdoor attraction. Disney Tourist Blog compared the second building’s shape to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, where rockwork envelops a structure with coaster track running over and through it.
The land includes Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along.
When will Villains Land and Piston Peak open?
Disney has not said.
Industry expectations point somewhere between late 2027 and 2029, with most estimates favoring the later end given the scale of the work.
Both lands are still in early construction. Filling a river and erecting three major show buildings is a multi-year job.
The view-blocking walls along Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are expected to stay up for years.
What else is changing at Magic Kingdom?
Quite a lot, and some of it sooner.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened May 3 after a 16-month refurbishment that brought new track, updated ride vehicles, enhanced Rainbow Caverns and a lowered height requirement of 38 inches.
Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress reopens in late spring 2027 with the resort’s first Walt Disney animatronic.
The Walt Disney World Railroad closes Sept. 28. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure closes Nov. 2 for its first refurbishment since opening.
Walt Disney World turns 55 on Oct. 1.
