Insomniac’s next Marvel title is rated M, a first for the studio’s superhero work. It shares a universe with the Spider-Man games and almost nothing else about them.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches today, and parents who bought Insomniac’s Spider-Man games for their kids should read the box.
The game arrives Sept. 15 exclusively on PlayStation 5. It is rated M.
Insomniac Games‘ three previous Marvel titles were rated T.
Why the Marvel’s Wolverine rating matters
The studio changed registers deliberately, and it says so.
Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games became family staples partly because they were survivable for younger players. Wolverine is not built that way.
The rating reflects intense violence, blood, and mature themes built around a character whose defining feature is retractable metal claws. The combat is designed to feel lethal rather than acrobatic.
Same studio. Same shared universe, since Wolverine sits within Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series. Entirely different audience.
It’s at the center of controversy
The game itself is being criticized for the blue scent trail “fart cloud” leading players through the game. It’s also said to be too basic and linear.
The game’s “narrative designer” also came under fire for making comments about Wolverine and Sabretooth yearning for each other. The game’s director had to issue a statement that this was not the case.
What kind of game is Marvel’s Wolverine
Two things about the structure surprise people who expect another Spider-Man.
It is single-player and narrative-driven, and it is not open-world. Insomniac has confirmed that directly.
It is also PS5 only. There is no PlayStation 4 version, and Insomniac has said the game was built from the ground up for the newer hardware.
On PS5 Pro, it uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s upscaling technology.
Where Marvel’s Wolverine takes place
Three locations have been confirmed, and one required a research trip.
Players move through the Canadian Wilderness, the streets of Tokyo, and both the high and low districts of Madripoor, the fictional Southeast Asian island nation from Marvel comics.
Insomniac sent team members to Japan early in production as part of a location-scanning program, recording real-world assets and studying natural environments.
Jean Grey is in the game
The X-Men connection lands at an unusual moment.
A gameplay trailer released June 2 confirmed Jean Grey joins Wolverine, with the game framing them as protecting the vulnerable as mutants face annihilation.
Marvel has separately cast Sadie Sink as Jean Grey in its X-Men film, dated May 5, 2028. Sink debuted the character in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
Two versions of Jean Grey in two continuities, arriving 20 months apart.
Who is voicing Wolverine
Liam McIntyre plays James “Logan” Howlett.
Marcus Smith and Mike Daly direct, having taken over the roles by October 2024. David Fleming composed the score. Comics artist Jock designed the cover.
Marvel’s Wolverine survived a major leak
The game’s development history includes an incident most studios do not recover from cleanly.
In December 2023, Insomniac was hit by a targeted ransomware attack. Development assets showing gameplay and story elements briefly became publicly accessible before Sony issued takedown notices.
Insomniac called the episode “extremely distressing” for the teams involved and said it would not change development plans.
The game is shipping on the date Insomniac announced in February.
What editions of Marvel’s Wolverine are available
Two, plus hardware.
A Standard Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition are available, with an upgrade path for Standard owners.
Limited-edition PS5 console bundles and accessories go on sale the same day, Sept. 15.
There is also a cross-promotion with Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. The default Wolverine costume from that game appears in this one, and vice versa.
What else Marvel has coming
The game sits between two large Marvel releases.
“Avengers: Doomsday” opens in theaters Dec. 18 with tickets already on sale, putting Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU as Doctor Doom.
The untitled X-Men film follows on May 5, 2028, with Adam Driver as Mister Sinister and Kevin Feige describing it as Jean Grey’s story.
Wolverine has not been announced for that film.
Marvel’s Wolverine was first revealed in September 2021, alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and went quiet for four years before its gameplay debut at a State of Play broadcast in September 2025.
