Giant McDonald’s Fry Aid machines pop up near colleges in Baton Rouge, Ann Arbor and Atlanta on Oct. 17. They hand out gift cards, inspired by a viral fries and Diet Coke combo.
McDonald’s newest vending machine doesn’t take your money. It gives you some.
The chain is putting giant Fry Aid machines in three college towns on Saturday, Oct. 17, Dexerto reported. They’ll be up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. local time for Homecoming weekend.
The machines don’t actually spit out fries. They dispense McDonald’s Arch Cards, the chain’s gift cards, which students can use to buy food, according to Dexerto.
McDonald’s announced the pop-ups on Thursday, Oct. 15, WBRZ in Baton Rouge reported.
Where are the McDonald’s Fry Aid machines?
Three spots, all on Saturday, according to Dexerto:
Baton Rouge, Louisiana: 120-124 W. Chimes St.
Ann Arbor, Michigan: 812 Monroe St.
Atlanta, Georgia: 170 Northside Drive SW, Suite 96
The Baton Rouge machine is near LSU’s campus, and it’s meant to cap off the school’s Homecoming week, WBRZ reported. The booth “will feature a dispenser loaded with McDonald’s gift cards for students to grab,” the station said.
Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan. McDonald’s hasn’t said which schools the Ann Arbor and Atlanta machines are aimed at.
There’s no Florida stop this time, sorry, Gators.
Why is it called Fry Aid?
Blame the internet. The promotion is inspired by the viral pairing of McDonald’s fries and a Diet Coke as a “recovery meal” on social media, both Dexerto and WBRZ reported.
McDonald’s is pitching the combo as a way for students to recharge after a busy Homecoming week, according to Dexerto.
Promo images show a tall red machine with a “Fry Aid” sign and the Golden Arches at the top. In the middle, there’s a lit-up slot with a sign underneath that reads “Lift up.”
How much money is on the Fry Aid gift cards?
McDonald’s hasn’t said. Neither Dexerto nor WBRZ reported a dollar amount for the Arch Cards.
Arch Cards are McDonald’s own gift cards, so whatever is loaded on them goes toward food at McDonald’s.
The machines are only around for five hours. Once 3 p.m. hits, they’re done, Sporked noted.
Can you get free McDonald’s fries without a Fry Aid machine?
Yes, if you use the app. Through the end of 2026, customers can get free fries with any purchase of at least $1 through the McDonald’s app, Dexerto reported.
That one works nationwide, so you don’t need to live near a college campus. Check the Deals section of the app before you order.
When McDonald’s ran a similar free fries deal in 2024, it was Fridays only, with a $1 minimum purchase in the app, Dexerto reported at the time.
What other giveaways has McDonald’s done lately?
The chain has been on a free-stuff kick. Earlier in October, McDonald’s handed out free bottles of its pickle juice at the Chicago Marathon. It called the promotion “Pickle Boost” and pitched the brine as a possible way for runners to fight muscle cramps, Dexerto reported.
Sporked joked that McDonald’s might just have had a load of pickle brine left over.
When do McDonald’s Disney Villains Boo Buckets come out?
Tuesday, Oct. 20. McDonald’s confirmed the date with a teaser from its Happy Meal account, BlogMickey reported. The logo frame reads “Out 10.20.”
The teaser shows five pairs of glowing eyes in purple, orange, white, green and red above a Boo Bucket. McDonald’s hasn’t named the villains.
Leaked photos pointed to Ursula in purple, Maleficent in green, Scar in orange, Jafar in red and Cruella De Vil in white, according to BlogMickey. McDonald’s hasn’t announced pricing or an end date.
Boo Buckets have come back every October since 2022, and Oct. 20 is the same weekday they’ve launched on each year, BlogMickey noted.
The timing lines up with Disney World, too. The buckets arrive during the final stretch of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which runs on select nights at Magic Kingdom through Oct. 31.
Villains are having a big year at Disney World. Disney confirmed the name Villains Land for Magic Kingdom’s planned villains area at D23 in August, BlogMickey reported. A Maleficent roller coaster and a Magic Mirror dark ride are on the way.
So the order of operations is clear. Free fries Saturday. Villain buckets Tuesday.
