McDonald's Hello Kitty and Godzilla crossover arrives August 18
McDonald’s teased the Sanrio and Toho pairing Monday with a video of Hello Kitty rising out of the ocean in a Godzilla headpiece. A promotional image also shows Mechagodzilla. The toy lineup hasn’t been revealed.
McDonald’s is putting Hello Kitty in a Godzilla suit.
The chain teased the crossover Monday across its own accounts and the official Happy Meal account, with a launch date of August 18 and a four-word caption: “cute meets kaiju 08.18.“
That’s the whole announcement so far. No toy list, no pricing, no confirmation of how it’s being sold.
What the McDonald’s Hello Kitty Godzilla teaser shows
The video opens on a Happy Meal box crossing the ocean on a small boat, which is already a stranger image than most fast food advertising attempts.
Something enormous surfaces behind it. It’s Hello Kitty, wearing a Godzilla-inspired headpiece with the textured skin and dorsal detailing intact.
A separate promotional image widens the picture. Hello Kitty appears in the Godzilla look beside Mechagodzilla and a third kaiju character, which means Toho licensed more than one monster for this.
Guillaume Huin, a senior marketing director at McDonald’s who has become the reliable early source on these promotions, posted his own tease the same day. He called it “Hall of fame collectibles in the making.“
What McDonald’s hasn’t actually said yet
Worth being precise here, because most of the coverage isn’t.
McDonald’s has not confirmed this is a Happy Meal promotion. The involvement of the Happy Meal account and the box sitting in the middle of the teaser point hard in that direction, and it would be genuinely surprising if it were anything else.
But the teaser doesn’t show a single toy, name a single item, or say what comes with what. Nothing has been confirmed beyond a date and an aesthetic.
Snackolator, which tracks fast food releases closely, has it going nationwide on the 18th and says the full lineup isn’t out yet either.
Hello Kitty crossovers are now a McDonald’s format
This is not a one-off, and the pattern is the interesting part.
In 2024, McDonald’s ran a Hello Kitty and Friends collection with Yu-Gi-Oh!, ten plush toys pairing Sanrio characters with duel monsters. Hello Kitty went as Dark Magician. Cinnamoroll got Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Kuromi got Slifer.
Then came Hello Kitty and Friends with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which reached the United States with all twelve figures rather than the partial assortments other markets received.
Ten pieces, then twelve. Sanrio has effectively become a chassis McDonald’s can bolt any other license onto, and the sets keep getting bigger.
Godzilla is a considerably odder fit than a turtle in a mask. Hello Kitty arrived in 1974, Godzilla in 1954, exactly twenty years apart, one designed to sell coin purses and the other to process a nuclear detonation.
They are both, at this point, national institutions with more merchandising range than most studios.
The lineup should surface in the next few days, since these promotions rarely stay quiet for a full week before launch. If the Yu-Gi-Oh and Turtles sets are any guide, the resale listings will be up before the fryers cool on the 18th.
