McFarlane Toys' 10- to 11-inch Doctor Doom and Thor statues open for preorder Monday, Nov. 10. The only price so far is $34.97, for a smaller Thing that Walmart already sells.
Doctor Doom is coming to your shelf more than a month before he hits theaters.
McFarlane Toys said Nov. 7 that its 1:6 scale Doctor Doom and Thor statues based on Avengers: Doomsday open for preorder Monday, Nov. 10, at select retailers. Each stands about 10 to 11 inches tall and comes with an environmental base, a backdrop scene and an art card.
McFarlane's post cut off at "AND a mini," which is quite the cliffhanger for a toy announcement. Comic Basics said the last extra is a mini poster.
There's more to the lineup. A fan account, Avengers Updates, posted a first look Nov. 7 at McFarlane figures of Doctor Doom, Thor, Cyclops, Gambit, Mister Fantastic and The Thing. Comic Basics reported Sunday, Nov. 8, that Doom, Cyclops, Gambit, Mister Fantastic and The Thing come in a smaller 1:10 scale.
McFarlane hasn't posted prices for the big statues. The one price so far is $34.97, for the 1:10 Thing at Walmart.
Here's McFarlane's own video of its comic-book Doctor Doom, an earlier 1:6 statue in the same style:
How much are McFarlane's Avengers: Doomsday figures?
Only one price is public. Walmart sells The Thing (Marvel Studios: Avengers: Doomsday) 1:10th Scale Collectible Gold Label for $34.97. The listing gives dimensions of 5.65 by 7.5 by 8.75 inches.
For the 1:6 statues, McFarlane's comic-book Doctor Doom is a useful guide. That 1:6 statue sells for $59.99 on McFarlane's online store, where it's currently sold out. ComicBook.com listed it at $49.97 at Walmart in May.
That's a comparison, not a price. McFarlane could charge more or less for the movie versions.
When can you preorder the Doctor Doom and Thor statues?
Monday, Nov. 10, at "select retailers," McFarlane said. It didn't name them. McFarlane's online store didn't list any Avengers: Doomsday items Sunday morning.
The Thing is already up at Walmart. Bleeding Cool reported Oct. 22 that it was expected in November, and Walmart's listing showed a Nov. 13 delivery date Sunday.
No release dates are out for the rest of the line. McFarlane's photos are labeled as prototypes, and the company notes that the final products are subject to change.
Which characters are in McFarlane's Avengers: Doomsday line?
Here's the lineup, with poses as Comic Basics described them:
Doctor Doom (1:6): dark green hood, flowing cloak and metal armor on a rocky base
Thor (1:6): black armor, red cape and his weapon slung over one shoulder
Doctor Doom (1:10): arms crossed, cloak draped behind him
Cyclops (1:10): mid-leap in a blue and yellow suit
Gambit (1:10): caught in motion
Mister Fantastic (1:10): one arm stretched toward the sky
The Thing (1:10): throwing a punch in a blue suit with the Fantastic Four logo
That's two Fantastic Four members, two X-Men and the Fantastic Four's top villain, plus one actual Avenger. Crowded party.
Are McFarlane's Doomsday figures toys for kids?
Not really. These are posed statues, not action figures with moving joints, Bleeding Cool and Comic Basics both noted. Walmart lists The Thing for ages 14 and up.
So if you're shopping for a young Marvel fan, think "display shelf," not "bathtub battle." A grown-up collector on your gift list, though? Prime target.
What else is new at McFarlane Toys?
A big ownership change. Gladstone Investment bought a majority stake in McFarlane Toys, Bleeding Cool reported Nov. 7. Todd McFarlane and CEO Stephan Tetrault are keeping a minority stake and will keep helping guide the company.
The deal's price wasn't disclosed.
When does Avengers: Doomsday come out?
Dec. 18, in theaters. Doom has been showing up everywhere ahead of it.
We've covered Avengers: Doomsday popcorn buckets at AMC and Cinemark, Loungefly's $90 light-up Doctor Doom bag and a giant Doctor Doom bauble in Disneyland Paris' Christmas decor. We also reported Nov. 3 that Disney said presales had topped $50 million.
