Solara is the Disney Destiny’s own Enchanted Pumpkin Tree, with 26 pumpkins split between Delight and Fright. Disney just shared her backstory and show details.
The Disney Destiny has its own Halloween pumpkin tree, and Disney just spilled her whole backstory.
Her name is Solara. She’s the Enchanted Pumpkin Tree that lives in the ship’s Grand Hall during Halloween on the High Seas, and she’s only on the Destiny.
The Disney Parks Blog laid out her story, her show and a few fun facts on Oct. 23. She first lit up in early September, when the Destiny’s first Halloween sailings began, BlogMickey and Laughing Place reported.
Feely Family Fun filmed her ceremony on board earlier this month:
What is Solara on the Disney Destiny?
She’s a giant Halloween tree with a face. Solara’s carved face sits on a twisting trunk, with hair made of vines and leaves, according to BlogMickey.
Bands of amber, orange and deep red gems run down her hair and trunk. Dozens of jack-o’-lanterns and gourds in orange, purple and gold hang from her branches, and some of the lanterns have glowing faces of their own.
She fits right into the Grand Hall, too. The room is themed to Wakanda, with purple and gold all over, Laughing Place said.
Why does Solara have 26 pumpkins?
Because Halloween has two sides, at least on this ship. The Destiny’s theme is heroes and villains, so Disney Live Entertainment built Solara around fright and delight.
She holds her arms wide with two sets of 13 carved pumpkins. One set is for Delight. The other is for Fright.
She also has 31 ember jewels. That happens to be the number of days in October, which feels about right.
Her name comes from “sol,” the Latin word for sun, the Parks Blog said.
What is The Tale of the Enchanted Pumpkin Tree?
It’s Solara’s wake-up show, and it happens on the evening of embarkation day in the Grand Hall.
Two storytellers, Zayah and Gamble, run it. They’re the Destiny-Seekers, and in Disney’s story they collect tall tales about magical trees from all over the world.
Gamble likes the silly side of Halloween. Zayah likes the mysterious side.
During the show, they argue about the right way to celebrate. Guests pick a team and join a “Delight or Fright” chant, and then Solara wakes up and showers the crowd with orange and green confetti pumpkins.
What does she look like when she’s lit up? Disney’s keeping that quiet.
“Her carvings are a secret until the show,” said Philip Kelley, a show director for Disney Live Entertainment.
The team played with different lighting effects on her design, Kelley said, and spread her sound across three decks while working in the Grand Hall’s lighting. After the show, guests can take photos with her for the rest of the trip.
How many Disney Cruise Line pumpkin trees are there?
Solara makes seven. Every Disney ship gets its own tree, with its own name and story, during Halloween on the High Seas:
Reap on the Disney Magic
Bog on the Disney Wonder
Grim on the Disney Dream
Muckelbones on the Disney Fantasy
Boo on the Disney Wish
Ginger on the Disney Treasure
Solara on the Disney Destiny
The Parks Blog calls Boo and Ginger her sisters. All three have a face on the trunk.
When can you see Solara on a Disney cruise?
Pretty much only this week, at least for this year. Halloween on the High Seas runs on sailings from late September through Halloween, according to Disney Cruise Line.
On the Destiny, that means select three-, four- and five-night Halloween sailings out of Fort Lauderdale.
Those cruises also bring Mickey’s Mouse-Querade Party, trick-or-treating around the ship and Halloween treats. Minnie, Daisy and Clarabelle even dress up as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus.
The Destiny is still new. It started sailing last November with a heroes and villains theme, and a statue of Black Panther greets guests in that same Grand Hall.
So Solara gets one more week in the spotlight. Then the confetti pumpkins get swept up, and she waits for next fall.
