Meta’s new VR Glasses, announced Sept. 23, 2026, will carry Disney+ and a Disney Immersive Cinema app from ILM with Star Wars: A New Hope and Avengers: Infinity War. The glasses cost $1,299.99 and arrive in spring 2027.
Meta wants you to watch Star Wars on your face. Disney is helping.
At its Meta Connect event on Wednesday, Sept. 23, Meta showed off Meta VR Glasses, a lightweight VR headset shaped more like a pair of glasses. Disney+ is one of the launch apps.
Industrial Light & Magic, Disney’s visual effects studio, is also building two new experiences for it. One of them puts Star Wars: A New Hope and Avengers: Infinity War inside a VR theater that spills past the edges of the screen.
What is Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM?
It’s a VR app for watching Disney movies with extra effects around them.
Per ILM, the movie stays in the middle, but effects and environments stretch out beyond the screen around you. The first two titles are Star Wars: A New Hope and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War.
“Both experiences reflect our belief that the future of entertainment is about crafting a new canvas for storytelling,” said Shereif Fattouh, an executive producer at ILM.
ILM hasn’t said when the app comes out or what it costs.
What is National Geographic: Beyond?
The other ILM project. It’s a wildlife experience made with National Geographic, which Disney also owns.
It uses 3D, 180-degree video shot on location in Africa, so animals and scenery surround you instead of sitting on a flat screen. ILM says more formats are coming, with details later.
Both apps are in the works for Meta VR Glasses and the existing Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets.
That’s the good news for anyone who already owns a Quest. You won’t need the new glasses to try the ILM apps, and a Quest 3S costs a lot less than $1,299.99.
How much are Meta VR Glasses?
$1,299.99, and they don’t come out until spring 2027.
Here’s the rest, per Meta:
They weigh about 100 grams, which Meta compares to a deck of cards.
The computer and battery sit in a separate puck you keep in your pocket, attached by a cable.
Battery life is up to three hours of video.
Meta calls them the first VR device certified as IMAX Enhanced.
That’s a lot of money. Meta is pitching it as a private movie theater, courtside seat and workspace you can carry in a bag.
What Disney content comes with Meta VR Glasses?
Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream some movies in 3D with immersive backgrounds, including Marvel’s The Avengers and Black Panther, according to Meta.
ESPN is on the list too. Meta says the glasses will carry more than 100 immersive live sporting events a year from partners including ESPN, MLB and the UFC.
Other launch apps include Prime Video, YouTube, HBO Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Crunchyroll and Tubi.
Has Disney done VR before?
Yes, a few times.
ILM’s immersive team made the Vader Immortal series for Meta’s Quest headsets back in 2019 and 2020, plus Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, which ties into the land at Disneyland and Disney World.
Disney+ also launched on Apple Vision Pro in 2024, with 3D movies and a few themed viewing rooms, including one inside Avengers Tower.
This new one is different because the movies themselves get upgraded. Whether people will pay $1,299.99 to see the Death Star trench run come out of the screen is another question. We’ll find out next spring.
