Lilo & Stitch director Chris Sanders says he sat behind Disney’s CEO at an early Lion King screening, and Eisner looked down during the film’s most important scene. His question afterward became a Disney animation legend.
Picture the most famous moment in “The Lion King.” Mufasa’s face in the clouds. “Remember who you are.”
Now picture Disney’s CEO looking at the floor the whole time.
That’s the story Chris Sanders, co-director of “Lilo & Stitch,” told Vulture in its 2022 oral history of the film. The story made the rounds again in late September after a viral post on X.
What happened at the Lion King screening?
Sanders says he sat right behind Michael Eisner at an early screening of “The Lion King.” Eisner, he said, had a rough morning and kept putting his head down during the film.
“At that moment, Michael Eisner looks down,” Sanders told Vulture, describing the scene where Rafiki tells Simba to look into the water. “So Mufasa’s ghost appears, and he says, ‘Simba, you are more than what you have become. You are the one true king,’ and Michael looks down the entire time.”
Eisner looked back up just as the clouds cleared, Sanders said.
What did Eisner say about The Lion King?
At the meeting afterward, “Michael said, ‘I don’t even know why Simba went back home,’” Sanders recalled.
Jeffrey Katzenberg, who ran Disney’s film studio at the time, explained that Mufasa’s ghost came back for Simba. According to Sanders, Eisner answered, “Oh, I didn’t get that at all.”
And then the kicker, as Sanders tells it: “I don’t know. I just didn’t see that. What happened? Mustafa who?”
Did Eisner miss the point of Mulan too?
Kind of, according to another Disney veteran in the same oral history.
Thomas Schumacher, then a Disney animation executive, described the end of “Mulan,” when her father tosses aside the emperor’s gifts and hugs her instead. Schumacher said the scene makes him cry every time.
“We screened it in New York for Michael Eisner. And Mulan didn’t nudge Michael at all,” Schumacher told Vulture. “At the end, he literally screamed, ‘Who’s the guy on the bench?!’”
How did that shape Lilo & Stitch?
It’s part of why the “Lilo & Stitch” team kept its head down.
The movie was made at Disney’s animation studio in Florida, far from the main lot in Burbank. Sanders said that when Eisner asked about the project, the answer was basically: it’s not ready yet, we’ll show you when it is.
“Michael Eisner didn’t see it until it was done,” Sanders said. “Everybody was nervous, like, Oh my God, we made a film and we never told Michael Eisner.”
Eisner’s reaction surprised them. “I really liked this. I like it. I can’t really explain it. I’ve never seen anything like it ... but I like it,” Sanders recalled Eisner saying.
Did Chris Sanders like Michael Eisner?
Yes, by his own account. “I like Michael a lot, but we don’t have a lot in common,” Sanders said in the oral history. He described Eisner as “super-nice and a fascinating person,” who was “really into hockey.”
He tells these stories with affection. Animators remember moments like this because the stakes felt so high in the room.
How did The Lion King and Lilo & Stitch do?
Just fine without Eisner catching every scene.
“The Lion King” made $1.06 billion worldwide after re-releases, per Vulture. “Lilo & Stitch” earned $273 million in 2002, then became a huge franchise. Disney’s live-action remake became one of the biggest hits of 2025.
And Mufasa? He’s still in the clouds, waiting for everyone who looked down to look back up.
