Disney’s first trailer for Mickey’s Home Alone shows Mickey and Pluto left behind for Christmas. It premieres Thanksgiving night on Disney Jr. and streams on Disney+ Nov. 27.
Somebody forgot Mickey Mouse. Again, apparently, because it’s Christmas and that’s how this franchise works.
Disney released the first trailer for Mickey’s Home Alone on Tuesday, Nov. 3. It’s a full-length animated holiday special that drops Mickey and Pluto into the plot of the 1990 classic, minus the paint cans to the face. Probably.
The special premieres on Thursday, Nov. 26, Thanksgiving night, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Jr. It streams on Disney+ the next day, Friday, Nov. 27.
What is Mickey’s Home Alone about?
Here’s Disney’s setup. Minnie surprises the gang with tickets to a world-famous Ice Palace. In the morning rush, Mickey and Pluto get left behind.
So the two of them have to protect their Christmas dinner from what Disney calls “two feisty villains, a raccoon and a weasel.” Meanwhile, Minnie and the rest of the gang try to get back home.
Disney says the special “puts a Mickey Mouse spin on the holiday classic.” That’s a polite way of saying it’s Home Alone with ears.
Here’s the official trailer from Disney Jr.:
Who made Mickey’s Home Alone?
The special comes from Wild Canary in association with Disney Jr. Shane Prigmore directs. Tom Rogers is executive producer, and Rachel Ruderman is co-executive producer. Tony Morales wrote the score.
Disney first announced the project on June 16, when it called it a “new full-length animated Christmas special.” Disney hasn’t released a runtime yet, and it hasn’t named the voice cast either.
What songs are in Mickey’s Home Alone?
There are two original songs, both by songwriter Keith Harrison Dworkin:
“Ho-Ho-Home for Christmas”
“Favorite Christmas Feeling”
There’s also a new arrangement of “Jingle Bells.” Disney says a digital EP with the music comes out Friday, Nov. 6, so you can start the holiday earworm three weeks early if you’re that kind of person.
When can you watch Mickey’s Home Alone?
Disney has stacked up several chances to catch it:
Thursday, Nov. 26: Disney Jr. premiere, 6 p.m. ET/PT
Friday, Nov. 27: streaming on Disney+
Monday, Nov. 30: Disney Channel encore, 7 p.m. ET/PT
Saturday, Dec. 19: Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas, 2 p.m. ET/PT
Disney says more airings will follow across its channels through the season. There’s also a screening at the Paley Center’s Paleyland event in New York City on Saturday, Dec. 5, with registration details still to come.
Wait, can Disney just use Home Alone like that?
It can. Disney owns Home Alone now. The 1990 movie was a 20th Century Fox release, and Disney picked up that film library when it bought most of 21st Century Fox in 2019.
The original came out Nov. 16, 1990. Chris Columbus directed it, John Hughes wrote and produced it, and it was the top-grossing movie of 1990 in the U.S. It made about $476.7 million worldwide on an $18 million budget, which is a lot of pizza money.
Disney’s releases for the Mickey special don’t mention the 1990 film or 20th Century by name. They don’t need to. The title does the job.
Is a new Home Alone movie happening too?
Nobody has confirmed one. In July, TMZ cited a report from Puck’s Matt Belloni that Macaulay Culkin had pitched Disney on a new film with himself back as Kevin. Culkin pushed back in an Instagram comment, writing, “Y’all are out of your mind.”
So for now, the only official new Home Alone story stars a mouse and his dog. Honestly, that tracks.
If you want the original, ABC is airing Home Alone on Thursday, Dec. 24, from 8 to 10:15 p.m., according to Laughing Place.
What other Disney holiday specials are coming?
Mickey isn’t the only one with holiday plans. A Proud Family Wizmas, a stop-motion special, hits Disney+ on Saturday, Nov. 14. A Sofia the First: Royal Magic holiday episode lands Nov. 26, according to Laughing Place’s November Disney+ list.
ABC also has Mickey’s Christmas Carol on Nov. 25 and the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade on Christmas morning. That’s a lot of Mickey for one month. He’s earned it, especially after getting left home.
