New aerial photos show white track going up on the Monsters, Inc. door coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, plus a new Monstropolis fountain and scaffolding all over Dark Avenue.
Those flying doors still have a ways to go. The track they’ll ride on is starting to show up, though.
New aerial photos of Disney’s Hollywood Studios show more track installed on the Monsters, Inc. door coaster, the headliner of the park’s new Monstropolis land. WDW News Today posted the shots Saturday, Oct. 31, with the photos credited to bioreconstruct on X, a longtime aerial watcher of Disney World construction.
Most of the black support columns are now standing, WDW News Today reported. Crews are putting in the white track “from the ride’s lowest points upward,” and the layout already shows plenty of twists and turns.
Here’s a recent Monstropolis construction walk-around from Attractions Magazine:
What do the new Monsters, Inc. coaster photos show?
Mostly track and the parts that hold it up. According to WDW News Today, more track pieces sit in the construction yard with two flatbed trucks parked nearby.
The black cylinders in the yard are the last of the supports. The flat rectangular pieces are block brakes and access flooring, the outlet said. Block brakes are the sections that keep coaster cars spaced apart so they can’t bump into each other.
The big, boxy show building is behind the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance show building. Disney plans to theme it as the Monsters, Inc. factory.
WDW News Today also said Cast Members recently signed the construction beams. That’s a sweet tradition on big builds. Somebody’s name will be hidden inside the scare factory forever.
The photos don’t show a finished lift or drop yet. So no, we can’t tell you how scary it looks from the top yet.
What else is new in Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios?
A second set of aerials, also from bioreconstruct and posted by WDW News Today on Oct. 31, shows the rest of the land filling in.
A central fountain is going up near the Glob Theater, about where the old Miss Piggy fountain stood.
Dark Avenue, the street that links the courtyard to the factory and coaster, is covered in scaffolding.
The Glob Theater, the former home of Muppet*Vision 3D, is mostly hidden behind scaffolding.
Harryhausen’s, in the old Mama Melrose’s building, has new light trim on its upper facade.
Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, in the old PizzeRizzo spot, is under scaffolding too.
Low concrete walls and rebar forms line the path out to the coaster.
The old Gonzo’s Royal Flush restrooms also have a rooftop water tower now, to go with their painted “Try Our Cans” sign. Yes, the bathroom has jokes.
All of this used to be Muppets Courtyard. The first Monstropolis building facade came out from behind its scaffolding around Oct. 26 or 27, so things are moving fast this month.
What kind of ride is the Monsters, Inc. door coaster?
It’s a big deal for Disney nerds. Disney says it will be the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park, and the first with a vertical lift.
Riders will sit on a door that gets “hoisted into the air by claws” and sent into the door vault, Disney Parks Blog said. If you’ve seen the movie’s big chase through the door warehouse, that’s the idea.
Josh D’Amaro announced the land in August 2024 with Billy Crystal, the voice of Mike Wazowski. “The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., all I wanted to do was ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley,” D’Amaro said then.
Pixar’s Pete Docter, who directed the 2001 film, was just as excited in a March 2025 Disney Parks Blog post. “It really is like a dream come true for us,” he said.
When does Monstropolis open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios?
Some of it opens in 2027. A Disney Parks Blog post from Aug. 16, 2026, said parts of Monstropolis open that year.
Disney hasn’t given an opening window for the coaster itself, WDW News Today noted, so it’s not clear yet whether the coaster opens with the rest. Don’t book a trip around the coaster just yet.
That August post also named several spots coming to the land:
The Glob Theater, with a show called “Welcome to Monstropolis”
Harryhausen’s, named after the sushi spot from the film
Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza
Scareporium, a shop
Monsters University Alumni Club
“Mike and Sulley will be our hosts,” Imagineer Chris Beatty said in that post.
For now, the best view of the coaster is from above. If you’re in the park this weekend, look past Rise of the Resistance toward that boxy building. That’s where the doors will live.
