Disney moved the Monsters, Inc. land up to 2027, which sounds like good news until you notice what is not included. The door coaster has no announced date, and its show building is bigger than Rise of the Resistance.
Monstropolis will begin opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027, ahead of schedule.
The Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster will not be part of it.
Disney confirmed the phased timeline at D23 in August and has not given the coaster an opening date. Construction on it continues backstage.
The show building is enormous
The door coaster’s show building is slightly larger than the one housing Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, which makes it the biggest at Hollywood Studios and among the largest anywhere at Walt Disney World.
Disney Tourist Blog, which has been tracking it from the ground, puts it nearly on par with the blue box that holds Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT.
Monstropolis is really two projects
That is why one half can open without the other.
The front half replaces Muppets Courtyard, reimagining existing venues rather than building new ones. The former Muppet*Vision 3D theater, PizzeRizzo and Mama Melrose are all getting facade work. That is what opens in 2027.
The coaster is a genuine expansion, going up on what used to be Cast Member parking and an access road behind the park.
What is the story of Monstropolis?
It picks up after the first movie.
Monstropolis has switched from scream power to laugh power, after Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan worked out that laughter generates far more energy. That discovery also changed how monsters see humans.
So humans get invited in, for H.U.M.A.N. Day. Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice.
What opens in 2027?
Dining, entertainment, shopping, and one significant show.
The Glob Theater hosts a production called Welcome to Monstropolis, with a new song by Randy Newman. Chris Beatty, a vice president at Walt Disney Imagineering, described monsters introducing humans to the city and pointing out how similar the two are.
Harryhausen’s Restaurant is also part of the opening phase, which will be the draw for anyone who has wanted to eat at the sushi place from the movie for 25 years.
Disney filed a run of construction permits for The Glob between March and midsummer, covering set installation and electrical work.
How did we get here?
The land was announced at D23 in August 2024, with Disney’s first suspended roller coaster as the headline.
In November 2024, Disney confirmed Muppet*Vision 3D and the Grand Avenue area would close for it. Construction started in 2025. The name came in October 2025, and the full backstory landed in June 2026.
What else is coming to Walt Disney World?
Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom opens first, also in 2027.
Beyond those two, be careful what you read. Disney has not given opening years for Piston Peak at Magic Kingdom or the planned Villains Land. Dates circulating for those are estimates, not announcements.
Which makes the Monstropolis situation the clearest picture Disney has offered on any of it. Half a land in 2027, a very large building that is not finished, and no word on when the ride inside it will run.
