A painted “Try Our Cans” ad is up over the Monstropolis restrooms at Hollywood Studios, in the building that used to be Gonzo’s Royal Flush. Here’s the joke and what’s next.
Monstropolis just got its first bathroom joke.
A painted “Try Our Cans” sign is now up above the public restrooms in Monstropolis, the Monsters, Inc. land under construction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, BlogMickey reported Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Those restrooms have a past. Until last December, the building was themed to Gonzo’s Royal Flush, the Muppets restroom in the old Muppets Courtyard.
Here’s a look at the latest Monstropolis reveals from Theme Park Obsession:
What does the new Monstropolis restroom sign look like?
It looks like an old-fashioned wall ad. BlogMickey describes “Try” and “Our” stacked on the left in yellow block letters with a dark shadow. A bigger “Cans” fills the right side, and a small “Can Co.” logo sits above the words in a rounded frame.
“Crews painted the sign directly onto the red brick,” BlogMickey wrote. “The mortar lines show through the yellow paint, so the sign looks like a weathered wall ad,” the site added.
The sign appeared as more scaffolding came down at Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the land’s new quick-service spot in the former PizzeRizzo building. BlogMickey says the restrooms are part of the Archie’s building complex.
What’s the joke behind “Try Our Cans”?
“This sign plays on two meanings,” BlogMickey explained.
The first one comes from the movie. “In ‘Monsters, Inc.,’ cans are the canisters that hold scream and laugh energy,” BlogMickey wrote. That’s how Monstropolis keeps the lights on, so the wall reads like an ad for a canister company.
The second meaning is right below it. “Cans” is also slang for restrooms, and a green “Public Restrooms” sign under the lettering “sets up the joke,” BlogMickey said.
What happened to Gonzo’s Royal Flush?
Gonzo’s Royal Flush opened in September 2016, next door to PizzeRizzo, WDW News Today reported at the time. Large 3D “Gonzo’s Royal Flush” letters sat on top of the green awning over the entrances. They copied the business’s sign from the 2011 movie The Muppets.
Faded “Broadway Plumbing” lettering was part of the theme, too. The fun stopped at the door, though. “Sadly, the interior of the restroom is not themed,” WDW News Today wrote in its 2016 photo report.
The Gonzo signage came down overnight in December 2025, after about nine years, WDW News Today reported. Crews removed the prop pipes in January. By July, “the exterior was mostly stripped, and new molding has been installed,” the site said.
Monstropolis concept art didn’t show any special theming for the restrooms, WDW News Today noted last December. The site added, “that’s subject to change.” The new sign shows it did.
Where did the Muppets go?
Monstropolis is taking over Muppets Courtyard and the Grand Avenue area. Muppet*Vision 3D closed for good after Saturday, June 7, 2025, WDWMagic reported. WFTV noted it ended a 34-year run.
The Muppets didn’t leave the park. They moved over to Sunset Blvd. to take over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets.
When does Monstropolis open?
Monstropolis will open in phases starting in 2027, WDWINFO and BlogMickey reported after Disney’s D23 presentation in August. Disney hasn’t announced an exact date.
The first phase includes:
The Glob Theater: In the old Muppet*Vision theater, with a show called “Welcome to Monstropolis” and a new Randy Newman song, WDWINFO said.
Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza: Quick service in the former PizzeRizzo.
Harryhausen’s: Table service in the former Mama Melrose’s, with an animatronic sushi chef.
Scareporium: A shop for “all of us human tourists,” as Imagineering’s Chris Beatty put it.
Monsters University Alumni Club: With the Elite Scarers Club inside.
The Monsters, Inc. door coaster comes later, and WDWINFO says no opening timeline has been announced. It’s “Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster,” according to Laughing Place.
How far along is Monstropolis construction?
The land is starting to look like a real monster city. BlogMickey spotted the first bricks at the land’s entrance on Oct. 19, plus an octagonal fountain going in across from the Glob Theater.
Cast members recently signed a steel beam for the door coaster, Laughing Place reported Oct. 23. More facades started coming out from behind scaffolding this week.
More scaffolding still has to come down, so keep an eye out for more monster-sized gags before the first phase opens in 2027.
