Mousetrap premieres on Netflix tomorrow, August 18
Ryu Jun-yeol plays a novelist whose identity is stolen by a figure known only as The Rat. Sul Kyung-gu costars as the loan shark he’s forced to work with. It’s adapted from the webtoon Field Mouse.
August’s most anticipated Korean thriller lands on Netflix tomorrow.
Mousetrap premieres August 18 globally.
Ryu Jun-yeol stars as Mun-jae, a reclusive novelist who wakes up to find his name, his money, and his entire identity erased by someone known only as The Rat.
To get any of it back, he partners with No-ja, played by Sul Kyung-gu, a loan shark running a private detective outfit.
It sounds a bit like the old movie The Net.
Who made Mousetrap
Kim Hong-sun directs, and he is the reason K-drama fans are excited.
He made The Guest and Money Heist: Korea, which means he’s worked in both the supernatural-procedural lane and the large-scale Netflix format.
The source material is Field Mouse, a popular webtoon. Webtoons have become a plentiful source for Korean streaming drama, and Netflix’s Korean slate has leaned on it heavily.
The episode count hasn’t been confirmed publicly, and the runtime is about 60 minutes per episode.
Why the casting matters
Ryu Jun-yeol and Sul Kyung-gu both tend to be film actors rather than television ones.
Sul in particular has spent decades as one of Korean cinema’s most reliable character leads. Putting him opposite Ryu in a cat-and-mouse film is an exciting choice.
What else is streaming in Korean drama this month
Mousetrap sits in a crowded August.
Flex X Cop Season 2 is already on Disney+, fourteen episodes, with Ahn Bo-hyun back as the chaebol heir turned detective and Yoo Seung-ho joining the cast.
The first season was really good.
Our Sticky Love dropped all at once on Netflix on August 7, starring Jung Hae-in.
I just finished this one, and it was an interesting mash-up of Overboard meets gritty crime drama.
My Bias, My Boss premiered August 3 on tvN, streaming internationally on HBO Max.
Closing the month on August 29 is Four Hands, Two Sonatas from tvN and Netflix, a musical youth drama marking Song Kang‘s return after military service.
When Mousetrap drops
Netflix releases in Korea and internationally on August 18. Whether all episodes arrive at once or weekly hasn’t been announced.
Netflix has used both kinds of drops for its Korean originals.
Our Sticky Love went out complete on day one. Four Hands, Two Sonatas is a twelve-episode tvN broadcast series, which usually means two episodes weekly.
We will see how it goes tomorrow.
