The Zootopia director has addressed the shipping question directly, and it might not be what people want to hear. There is chemistry, there are soulmate moments, and he is deliberately keeping the tension unresolved.
Byron Howard knows exactly what Zootopia fans want to know.
The director has been answering the Nick and Judy question for a decade, and his most direct response came earlier this year.
“It’s not romance, but there’s something wonderful that happens between them.”
What Byron Howard has said about a Nick and Judy romance
Speaking to ScreenRant around Zootopia 2’s streaming debut, Howard confirmed the creative team are fans of the Nick and Judy relationship and said there is definitely chemistry between them.
He acknowledged the decade-long gap between the first two films generated enormous conversation about the nature of their partnership.
Then he went further than expected. Howard said there are moments in Zootopia 2 where he feels the two are soulmates, describing something beyond friendship.
He stopped short of calling it romance.
Why the tension is intentional
Discussing Zootopia 3, he noted that some people want Nick and Judy together as a couple and others want them to stay friends, saying he loves that the tension exists among fans and crediting the chemistry Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin bring to the roles.
On the sequels generally, Howard said the approach is to look back at what audiences fell in love with, then expand the world and take the characters to new levels.
That is a filmmaker describing a dynamic he intends to keep developing without resolving.
What Jared Bush has said about interspecies couples
Jared Bush, who wrote both films and now serves as chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, confirmed interspecies couples exist in Zootopia.
Asked directly whether they are part of the universe, Bush said yes, adding that he cannot see any reason they would not exist. He described Zootopia as reflecting human society, with the animals functioning as people, which makes such relationships logical within the world.
Bush also confirmed publicly in 2016 that Pronk and Bucky, the neighbors who argue through Judy’s apartment wall, are married. Bush voices Pronk.
Whatever obstacle might stand between Nick and Judy, social acceptance within Zootopia is not it.
What the directors said back in 2016
The question is as old as the franchise.
In a 2016 interview with Mandatory, Howard was asked whether a sequel could explore a romance between the two. “I think it’s beautiful,” he said. “Better than ok.”
Co-director Rich Moore agreed.
Ten years and two films later, the answer has grown more specific without becoming a yes.
The Zootopia 2 scene the filmmakers built everything around
One sequence anchors the current conversation.
Howard described the heart-to-heart between Nick and Judy following their escape from death as the guiding light everything else in the film was hung up on.
It went through significant revision. Bush said the conversation originally took place atop a snowy mountain near the Lynxleys’ estate, with Judy racing across town to reach Nick in time.
That version did not work emotionally. Bush explained that if Nick was not risking himself to save Judy in that moment, the impact was not the same, which forced the team to make both events happen at once.
The solution came from the Weather Walls, the enormous climate structures separating Zootopia’s biomes.
How big Zootopia 2 actually got
Zootopia 2 grossed roughly $1.87 billion worldwide against a $150 million budget, making it Disney’s highest-grossing animated film ever.
It ranks second among all animated films and finished as the second-highest-grossing release of 2025, behind “Ne Zha 2.”
It opened at the El Capitan Theatre on Nov. 13, 2025 and went wide Nov. 26, reaching Disney+ on March 11.
What is confirmed about Zootopia 3
Less than the discussion suggests.
Disney announced the film at D23 in August, with Jared Bush revealing that birds will enter the city for the first time.
Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan appeared alongside Bush at the Honda Center. The project is in early development with no release date, and no director, writer or producer has been formally announced.
Michael Giacchino scored Zootopia 2. Yvett Merino produced it.
The setup for the next film happens in Zootopia 2’s post-credits scene, where a single bird feather lands on Judy’s windowsill.
