No George Takei and Wil Wheaton, Dwayne Johnson Does NOT Have To Talk Politics
People are sick to death of celebrities constantly preaching at them
Dwayne Johnson is under fire from the politically pickled because he won’t make everything he does about politics.
Because that is going so well for Mark Ruffalo, Mark Hamill, Alyssa Milano, etc.
How did this start?
Johnson told Esquire Magazine that he will do the smart thing and stay out of politics. He wants to focus on the storytelling.
“And the main thing for me, the thing that in the morning I swing my legs out of bed and I run towards, is creating. It’s art. It’s storytelling. I’ve learned I’m going to keep my politics to myself.
There are moments when, hey, there’s nothing we can’t talk about. If I’m wrong, I’ll tell you I’m wrong. Or if I feel like I got a leg up and this is the right way to go, I’ll share it with you.
Politics is omnipresent and it’s forever. I don’t like it. I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. I hate all the bullshit that comes with it.”
It is a pretty reasonable take.
Many shows and films have been tanked by either extreme or overt political messaging or by those involved constantly pushing their own personal politics.
The majority of people want to be entertained, not lectured. Plus, this assumes that global audiences will have the same views, which is not the case.
And because some people can do nothing but discuss politics 24/7 it caused activist actors like George Takei to call him out.
Takei took to Threads to post about Johnson saying “Silence is complicity.”
I’m so tired of hearing that comment.
No one owes you their platform Takei. Silence is smart because he realizes that people don’t want to hear his political hot takes. Everyone is sick to death of it. Frankly, when I hear someone constantly vomit political opinions at me, I start to distance myself from both their “cause” and the person.
Enter Wil Wheaton
Not to be outdone Wheaton jumped in there with
“So disappointing to find out he is such a coward”.
Wheaton is another one who spends most of his time posting about politics.
Just recently, he came under fire for posting an image of himself and someone else flipping off Trump Tower with the comment “Maybe it’ll happen while we are here.”
Many people have disliked various presidents, but the level of political meltdowns by people like Wheaton has gotten ridiculous.
Behavior like this just makes Johnson’s choice seem correct.
People want to be entertained, not lectured at.
Johnson doesn’t owe any party his voice, his platform, his job, etc.
He says he is more about uniting people than dividing people, and frankly, the world needs more of that, which is why the World Cup has been a breath of fresh air to many.
If a celebrity chooses to use their voice for a cause, that is up to them.
It is coming across as entitlement that is turning people off.
