Walmart added Papa Johns to its app’s restaurant tab, so you can order a pizza by itself or toss it in with your groceries. It’s rolling out market by market this fall.
Your Walmart grocery order can now come with a pizza on top.
Papa John’s has teamed up with Walmart to deliver pizzas, sides, and desserts through Walmart Express Delivery, per Restaurant Dive. The pizza comes from Papa John’s restaurants near Walmart stores, not from the Walmart store itself.
The two companies announced the deal on Sept. 10. It’s starting in select markets this fall before expanding to thousands of Papa Johns locations nationwide, Restaurant Dive reported.
How do you order Papa John’s from Walmart?
Through the Restaurants tab in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com.
You can order Papa John’s on its own or bundle it with the rest of your Walmart haul, per Restaurant Dive. Papa Johns says the menu includes pizzas, wings, sandwiches, sides and desserts.
To see if it’s available where you live, enter your delivery address in the Walmart app. If Papa Johns shows up under Restaurants, you’re in.
Is Papa John’s delivery through Walmart cheaper?
Not always. Compare before you check out.
Walmart’s standard delivery fee is $9.95, and Walmart+ members get free delivery on orders of $35 or more, per Grocery Coupon Guide. That can make a pizza add-on a good deal if you’re already placing a big grocery order.
But menu prices can differ by location and by app. The safest move is to build the same order in both the Walmart app and the Papa Johns app and compare the final totals.
Why is Papa Johns partnering with Walmart?
To reach new customers.
“By bringing our focus on quality to Walmart Express Delivery, we’re giving customers an opportunity to try Papa Johns in new occasions as they shop, while also introducing the brand to new people,” Chris Lyn-Sue, Papa Johns’ global chief marketing officer, said in a statement.
Papa Johns’ same-store sales have slipped in recent quarters as delivery apps give diners more choices beyond pizza, Restaurant Dive reported.
The chain has also been rethinking how it spends on third-party delivery apps. CEO Todd Penegor said on an August earnings call that there’s an opportunity “to make those dollars work harder with promotions.” Walmart gives Papa Johns another way in the door, with shoppers who are already ordering anyway.
What other restaurants deliver through Walmart?
Papa Johns is the latest in a growing list.
Walmart started restaurant delivery in June with Subway, its biggest in-store restaurant tenant, per Restaurant Dive. Then Dunkin’ signed on in early September, starting with about 150 Dunkin’ shops inside Walmart stores before expanding to locations outside them.
Papa Johns is the first national chain on the list delivering entirely from restaurants outside Walmart stores, per Papa Johns.
When will Papa John’s Walmart delivery be everywhere?
There’s no date yet. Papa John’s and Walmart say it starts in select markets this fall and expands nationwide after that.
If you don’t see it yet, check back every few weeks. The Restaurants tab is clearly where Walmart wants you to look for dinner next.
What’s next for Walmart delivery?
More restaurants, probably. In just a few months, Walmart has gone from zero restaurant partners to three, and each one adds a reason to open the Walmart app at dinnertime instead of a food delivery app.
For now, the combo is simple: milk, eggs, paper towels, and a large pepperoni, all at your door in one trip.
