Paul Bettany told Jimmy Kimmel he overacted so hard in one VisionQuest scene that he burst blood vessels in his eye, and Marvel had to paint the red out of two weeks of footage.
Paul Bettany has played a synthetic man for more than a decade. It turns out the human part of him is the one that breaks.
The Vision actor told Jimmy Kimmel that he hurt his own eye while shooting Marvel Television’s VisionQuest, the Disney+ series that wraps up this fall. Entertainment Weekly and Fox News both wrote up the late-night chat, with EW posting its story Friday, Oct. 30.
“So, I was pretending to have a device on my head that is doing something to my brain, and I was just wildly overacting,” Bettany said, as quoted by Fox News. “And I blew out about 10 blood vessels in my eye.”
So yes, Vision got hurt by pretending. That’s a very Vision way to get hurt.
How did Paul Bettany hurt his eye on VisionQuest?
No stunt was involved. Bettany was acting out a scene where a gadget on Vision’s head messes with his mind, and he leaned into it a little too hard.
The eye stayed bloody for about two weeks, according to both Fox News and EW. The show kept shooting anyway. That left Marvel’s effects team to clean up the red from everything filmed in that stretch.
“It was a lesson in less is more,” Bettany said, in EW’s version of the quote. He added that he thinks it “must’ve cost production so much to take it out.”
EW reported that it was his left eye. Fox News didn’t say which one.
Can Paul Bettany even see without his glasses?
Barely, by his own account. He told Kimmel that “the irony is the actor playing Vision is kind of myopic,” and that he can’t see a thing when he takes his glasses off. Both outlets carried that line.
So the guy who plays a walking supercomputer needs specs to find the coffee pot. Same, Paul. Same.
Kimmel also asked whether AI companies have tried to hire him to voice J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s old computer butler, for their own products. Bettany played that voice in the early Iron Man and Avengers movies. “Gosh, I wish,” he said, per Fox News. He joked he’d be “hanging up my acting.”
What is VisionQuest about?
VisionQuest follows the white, rebuilt Vision from WandaVision in 2021. He has his memories back. But Bettany told Kimmel that Vision is “unable or perhaps unwilling to attach any feelings to them.”
According to Fox News, Bettany described Vision living a quiet life in Scotland, working at a pub. At night, he goes into a “mind space” that he called “a mansion” full of “different AIs who have differing personalities.”
Marvel’s official page lists Bettany, James Spader, Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Orla Brady, Emily Hampshire, James D’Arcy, Ruaridh Mollica, Diane Morgan and more. Forbes reported that Spader plays Ultron again, with D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H. and Miller as Jocasta. That’s a whole lot of Stark software in one house.
Terry Matalas, who ran Star Trek: Picard Season 3, is the showrunner. Fox News called the show the last part of a trilogy that started with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024.
How did James Spader end up back as Ultron?
Spader hadn’t played Ultron since Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. EW reported that Matalas pitched the return, and Bettany said he figured Spader would say yes.
“I was pretty confident that he would because it’s so eccentric and Terry’s so eccentric in the way that he thinks,” Bettany told EW.
When does the VisionQuest finale come out?
VisionQuest premiered on Disney+ in mid-October with two episodes. Marvel’s own promo says it began streaming Oct. 14, and Forbes put the U.S. start on the evening of Oct. 13.
Forbes listed eight episodes in all, with Episode 7 on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and the finale, titled “Forever,” on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Marvel hasn’t posted an episode count on its show page.
New episodes land on Tuesdays, EW said. If you catch up now, watch for the scene with the gadget on Vision’s head. Somewhere under the digital cleanup is one very red eye.
Bettany has played Vision since Age of Ultron, through Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and WandaVision. After 11 years, he finally learned to dial it down. Mostly.
