Disney is retiring the app after eight years without announcing a reason or a replacement. Batuu Bounty Hunters survives through MagicBand+. Your saved achievements do not.
The Play Disney Parks app disappears in 12 days.
Disney is retiring it on Sept. 16, pulling it from app stores and ending the ability to log in. Theme park reporter Scott Gustin first reported the date on Aug. 17.
The company has not announced a replacement or explained why.
What you lose when Play Disney Parks shuts down
The single biggest casualty is the most elaborate thing the app ever did.
Star Wars: Datapad existed only inside the app and retires with it. That feature let guests in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge scan cargo, translate Aurebesh, interact with droids and control panels, intercept transmissions and poke at systems throughout Black Spire Outpost.
There is no MagicBand+ version. It simply ends.
Also going: attraction queue games for Space Mountain, Toy Story Mania, Splash Mountain and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, along with the ACE Guide to Pandora, trivia challenges, digital achievements and badges.
Back up your achievements before Sept. 16
Once the app goes, saved progress and achievement records go with it. Anyone who wants a record of what they completed should open the app and screenshot it before the 16th.
There is no export function and no announced migration path.
What survives after the Play Disney Parks app retires
Two things keep working, and one of them only partially.
Star Wars: Batuu Bounty Hunters remains playable at both versions of Galaxy’s Edge. The game runs on MagicBand+ and the screens already installed throughout the land, so it never needed the phone to function. The app component stops working.
At Walt Disney World, the Fab 50 gold character statues stay in place. Waving a MagicBand+ at them still triggers audio effects.
What ends is the ability to track which of the 50 you have found across the four parks.
What happens to DuckTales World Showcase Adventure
Nobody knows.
The EPCOT interactive experience has been down for refurbishment for several weeks. When outlets asked about its future, Disney said it had no information to share.
The game relies heavily on app integration. Treat any return as unconfirmed until an official operating notice appears.
The app had already been abandoned
The shutdown looks less sudden once you check the update history.
Play Disney Parks launched in June 2018, turning phones into interactive tools for queues and land exploration. It expanded with each major opening, adding content for Galaxy’s Edge and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
The last significant update arrived with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in 2024.
Two years of silence preceded the announcement.
Why Disney might be retiring it
Disney has said nothing, so this is inference rather than reporting.
The retirement lands amid sustained complaints that a Disney park visit now requires too much phone time. Guests already use the main app for park reservations, Lightning Lane bookings, mobile ordering, wait times, and photos.
Play Disney Parks was designed to enhance the physical environment. It also gave visitors one more reason to look down at a screen during an expensive vacation.
Removing a second app is one fewer thing competing for attention, whether or not that was the reasoning.
Your core Disney park tools are unaffected
Worth confirming, since app shutdowns tend to cause broader panic.
Reservations, Lightning Lane, mobile order, wait times, and PhotoPass all live in the main My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps. None of that changes.
Play Disney Parks was always a separate, optional download.
This is not the first Disney app to be retired
The DisneyNow mobile app was discontinued on Sept. 23, 2024, though the service remains accessible through web browsers on computers. Disney+ absorbed most of that function.
Play Disney Parks has no equivalent successor announced.
For the app itself, there is no farewell event and no last-day promotion. On Sept. 16 the login stops working.
