The new fall flavor has a thinner icing swirl than Pop-Tarts’ old apple pastries. It’s only at Kroger-family stores, including Ralphs near Disneyland.
Apple pie for breakfast is officially a thing again.
Pop-Tarts Frosted Apple Pie is out now at Kroger and Kroger-family stores, candy spotter @candyhunting shared on Instagram on Oct. 17. It’s the latest fall flavor from the toaster pastry brand.
Fans are already into it. One commenter said the first box was gone in a day and that it reminds them of McDonald’s apple pie, Sporked reported.
What do Pop-Tarts Frosted Apple Pie taste like?
Think apple pie filling inside a classic Pop-Tarts crust, with a swirl of icing on top.
The icing is the big change. Sporked said the new flavor looks a lot like Pop-Tarts’ Frosted Apple Turnover, a Walmart exclusive from late 2024, but with a thinner icing swirl instead of a thick layer. That’s a good thing, since the heavy icing was the main complaint about the turnover version.
Like most Pop-Tarts, these are sweet. A two-pastry pack has 29 grams of sugar, and they use artificial flavors.
Where can you buy Pop-Tarts Frosted Apple Pie?
For now, only at stores in the Kroger family. Besides Kroger itself, that includes chains like:
Ralphs and Food 4 Less in Southern California, including near Disneyland
Fred Meyer
King Soopers
Harris Teeter
Smith’s, Fry’s and Dillons
If you don’t have a Kroger-family store nearby, you’ll have to wait and see if the flavor expands.
Why does Pop-Tarts make store-exclusive flavors?
It’s a regular move for the brand. Pop-Tarts often launches flavors as exclusives at Kroger, Walmart or Target, Sporked noted.
It makes the flavors feel rare, and it lets the company test new ideas in a smaller market before going big. Some exclusives later roll out everywhere. Others disappear after one season.
Are there other new apple pie snacks this fall?
Plenty. Apple pie season is in full swing in the grocery store. Costco has a new Apple Pie Sundae, and Smucker’s has a new Apple Crumb Pie.
Most brands are skipping plain apple pie and adding a twist instead, like a sundae, a crumble or, in Pop-Tarts’ case, a frosted breakfast pastry.
How long have Pop-Tarts been around?
Pop-Tarts first hit shelves in 1964 and have been a lunchbox and breakfast staple ever since. Frosted Strawberry and Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon are still the big sellers, but the brand constantly rotates in limited flavors.
Fall and the holidays are some of its busiest seasons for that, with flavors like pumpkin pie and gingerbread showing up over the years.
Should you try Pop-Tarts Frosted Apple Pie?
If you’re a fan of McDonald’s baked apple pies or fall apple everything, yes, if you can find them. Toast them for the best version. The warm filling is the whole point.
And if you’re near a Kroger-family store, grab a box sooner rather than later. Store exclusives like this don’t always stick around.
Can you order Pop-Tarts Frosted Apple Pie online?
Possibly. Kroger-family stores offer pickup and delivery, and the photo Sporked used came from an Instacart listing, so search your store’s app or Instacart before making a special trip.
Kroger’s family of stores is bigger than most people realize. It also includes QFC, Mariano’s, Pick ‘n Save, City Market, Baker’s and Pay Less, among others.
Does Pop-Tarts really have its own football bowl game?
It does. The Pop-Tarts Bowl is a college football bowl game in Orlando, and it went viral in 2023 for its edible mascot, a giant walking Pop-Tart that was lowered into a giant toaster after the game so the winning team could “eat” it.
The brand has leaned into the joke ever since. So yes, Pop-Tarts has a sense of humor, and a new apple pie flavor right before football’s bowl season fits the brand perfectly.
