Regal’s new Deep Cuts series brings cult favorites like Gremlins 2 and Howard the Duck back to theaters in November, plus family rereleases including The Dark Crystal, for $7.99.
Some old favorites are heading back to the big screen.
Regal is launching Deep Cuts, a November series of one-day screenings of lesser-known and underappreciated movies, the theater chain announced Monday, Oct. 26.
Tickets are $7.99, and the series also includes four family-friendly weekend rereleases.
What family movies is Regal bringing back?
Four kid-friendly picks, each showing for a weekend, according to Regal:
Zathura (2005): Saturday, Nov. 7, and Sunday, Nov. 8
Rise of the Guardians (2012): Nov. 14-15
The Dark Crystal (1982): Nov. 21-22
Addams Family Values (1993): Nov. 28-29
The Dark Crystal comes from Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. Disney now owns the Muppets, but The Dark Crystal still belongs to The Jim Henson Company.
What is The Dark Crystal about?
A fantasy adventure told entirely with puppets. Jim Henson and Frank Oz directed the 1982 movie, which follows a young Gelfling named Jen on a quest to heal a magic crystal and save his world.
Netflix later made a prequel series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, in 2019.
What is Regal’s Deep Cuts series?
A lineup of one-day showings of movies that “dared to be different,” said Brooks LeBoeuf, senior vice president of U.S. content at Regal.
The series runs from Sunday, Nov. 1, through Monday, Nov. 30, with a new movie almost every day.
What movies are in Regal Deep Cuts?
The lineup is split into weekly themes, according to Regal.
Worlds Apart kicks off the series Nov. 1 with international films. Dark Obsessions includes Drive (2011) on Nov. 14 and Blow Out (1981) on Nov. 10. Cult Status has After Hours (1985), Repo Man (1984), Vanilla Sky (2001) and the 1926 silent comedy The General.
Class Acts wraps up the month with Hoosiers (1986) on Nov. 29 and Three O’Clock High (1987) on Nov. 30.
Which fan favorites are in the Second Look week?
Some of the most fun picks. The Second Look week includes:
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) on Nov. 22, The World’s End (2013) on Nov. 23, Blade II (2002) on Nov. 24 and Cowboys & Aliens (2011) on Nov. 25.
Howard the Duck (1986) plays on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) follows Nov. 27, and Waterworld (1995) closes the week Nov. 28.
Is Howard the Duck a Marvel character?
Yes. Howard the Duck started in Marvel comics in the 1970s. The 1986 movie was famously a flop but has picked up a cult following over the years.
Since Disney owns Marvel, Howard has popped up in Marvel Studios movies, including cameos in Guardians of the Galaxy.
