Zach Cregger’s reboot more than doubled the franchise record. Practical Magic 2 fell 59 percent, and Spider-Man passed $944 million domestic in its eighth weekend.
“Resident Evil” opened to roughly $60 million domestically this weekend, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
That is the biggest opening the franchise has ever had, and it is not close. The previous record belonged to “Resident Evil: Afterlife”, which took $26.6 million in 2010.
Director Zach Cregger now has the best opening of his career.
How did Resident Evil do worldwide?
Roughly $108 million globally, with about $48 million of that from international markets.
A video game adaptation clearing a hundred million in three days would have been remarkable a few years ago. It is closer to routine now, which says more about how studios finally learned to make these than about this particular game.
Why did Practical Magic 2 drop so much?
It fell 59 percent in its second weekend, down to about $12.1 million from a $30 million opening.
Its domestic total sits near $50 million, with roughly $76.8 million worldwide against a reported $75 million production budget. A sequel arriving 28 years after the original has a built-in audience that shows up immediately but a second-weekend drop is normal.
Is Spider-Man still in the top three?
Yes, in weekend eight.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” added about $6.5 million and pushed past $944 million domestically. It took the all-time domestic record from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” earlier this month, and it is still adding to the number every week.
For a film that far into its run to hold third place is unusual. Most blockbusters are out of the top five by their sixth weekend.
What else was in the top 10?
“The Odyssey” took about $4.9 million in its sixth weekend, followed by “Coyote vs. Acme” at roughly $4.5 million.
Below that: “Runner” at about $3.18 million, “Daniel and the Fiery Furnace” at $3.14 million, and a 40th anniversary re-release of “Transformers: The Movie” at around $3.1 million. “The Weight” took $2.3 million and “Buddy” about $1.9 million.
A 40-year-old animated movie outgrossing two new releases is the kind of result that gets mentioned in exhibition meetings.
Is this a good weekend for theaters overall?
The three-day total came in around $110 million across the market, carried almost entirely by one movie.
That is the shape of most weekends now. One title takes more than half the box office and everything else divides what is left.
The fall calendar gets crowded from here, and “Resident Evil” has roughly two weeks of open air before it has real competition for the horror audience.
