Nexus Point News reports that Rick Riordan and Angela Robinson are developing a Kane Chronicles series at 20th Television for Disney+. Disney has not announced it. The books ended up at Netflix originally because they were not part of the Fox acquisition.
Rick Riordan’s Egyptian mythology trilogy is reportedly getting a Disney+ series, six years after Netflix bought it and failed to make it.
Nexus Point News reported Monday that Riordan and Angela Robinson are creating a Kane Chronicles series at 20th Television for Disney+, following the outlet’s earlier reporting that 20th acquired the rights in 2024.
Disney has not confirmed any of this. No official announcement has been made, no casting has been revealed, and there is no episode count or premiere date.
It’s all still a rumor, as Disney has not confirmed it.
What is The Kane Chronicles?
The trilogy spans The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpent’s Shadow, published between 2010 and 2012.
It follows siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, who discover they are magicians descended from the pharaohs Narmer and Ramses the Great, and that the gods of ancient Egypt are active in the modern world. The books alternate between the siblings’ first-person perspectives.
Netflix got these books because Disney missed them
When Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, the rights to The Kane Chronicles were not part of the deal.
Netflix swooped in and picked them up, and in 2020 Riordan announced a trilogy of feature films. Diandra Pendleton-Thompson, a writer on Star Trek: Prodigy, scripted the first, based on The Red Pyramid.
Four years later, nothing had been made.
In February 2024, Riordan explained the outcome to a fan on Goodreads. “Right now, Kane Chronicles is in ‘turnaround,’ which means Netflix has decided not to move forward, and their option has lapsed after trying for two years to develop a script they liked,” he wrote.
He was philosophical about it. “This is not at all unusual,” he added, noting that streamers were shrinking development slates across the board. “Kane got caught in that trend, despite the strong success of Percy TV.”
Disney reportedly picked it up.
The books already connect to Percy Jackson
The Kane Chronicles is set in the same shared universe as Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. Riordan has already written supplementary crossover stories featuring characters from both the Percy Jackson and Kane series meeting.
Which means Disney would hold two properties that are explicitly designed to intersect on the same streaming service.
Percy Jackson is one of Disney+’s better performers
Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted on Disney+ in 2023. After its first season, Bob Iger told investors it had been streamed more than 110 million hours, an estimated 20.6 million views.
It holds a 95% critics score and an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Both of the earlier Percy Jackson feature films are rated Rotten.
Season 3 premieres November 20, 2026, which will take the series past the film franchise in total installments.
Outside Star Wars and Marvel, it is among the platform’s strongest original series.
Nothing is official yet
Disney and 20th Television have made no announcement. Nexus Point News says it reached out to representatives for the studio, Riordan, and Robinson.
The difference this time is that Disney has a working Riordan show on the air, a shared universe already written into the source material, and a third season arriving in November. That is a considerably better starting position than the last studio had.
