Two outlets citing unnamed Paramount insiders report that David Ellison isn’t canceling HBO’s Harry Potter show. Neither company has said so on the record. The series is set to premiere on HBO Max at Christmas 2026.
Worried the new owners might pull the plug on HBO’s Harry Potter show? A new report says they won’t. But it’s a rumor, and it rests on anonymous sources.
Cosmic Book News reported on Sept. 30, 2026, that David Ellison, Paramount’s CEO, is not canceling HBO’s Harry Potter series. Fandom Pulse reported the same thing. Both cite unnamed insiders.
We couldn’t find any public comment from Paramount or HBO on the reports.
Why would the Harry Potter series be at risk?
Because HBO is about to get a new owner.
Paramount is buying Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO’s parent company. The deal is set to close on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, per the companies. The combined company will be called Skydance, per TechCrunch.
When a company changes hands, big, expensive projects can get a second look. That’s where the worry comes from.
Both outlets also claim some people at Paramount were concerned about online criticism of the show’s teaser and casting. Cosmic Book News says Paramount held meetings about it in mid-September. Those claims also come from unnamed sources, and we couldn’t confirm them.
What has David Ellison said about HBO on the record?
He’s promised to leave it alone, more or less.
“HBO should stay HBO,” Ellison said during a March 2, 2026, investor call, per The A.V. Club. He praised HBO chief Casey Bloys and his team and said Paramount wants HBO “to be able to operate with independence.”
He didn’t mention Harry Potter by name in those remarks, per The A.V. Club.
When does the HBO Harry Potter series premiere?
Christmas 2026, on HBO Max, per TheWrap. Season 1 is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The main cast, per TheWrap:
Dominic McLaughlin as Harry
Arabella Stanton as Hermione
Alastair Stout as Ron
Nick Frost as Hagrid
John Lithgow as Dumbledore
Janet McTeer as McGonagall
Paapa Essiedu as Snape
Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner, and Mark Mylod directs. J.K. Rowling is an executive producer.
HBO has said the show will adapt one book per season over about a decade. Cosmic Book News reports season 2 started filming in August.
Does the merger affect Universal’s Wizarding World?
Nothing announced says so.
Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands in Orlando and Hollywood, plus the Ministry of Magic area at Epic Universe, run under a license from Warner Bros. Neither company has said the merger changes that deal.
So for now, Butterbeer is safe too.
What else will Skydance own?
A lot of big franchises. Besides Harry Potter, the combined company’s lineup includes the DC Universe, Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings films and Yellowstone, per TechCrunch.
It also brings Paramount+ and HBO Max under one roof, along with networks like CBS, CNN, TBS and Food Network.
Should you believe the Harry Potter rumor?
Carefully. Cosmic Book News and Fandom Pulse report the same claim from unnamed insiders, so we count it as one source, not two.
On the other side, nothing official points to a cancellation. HBO has a premiere date, a cast and a long-term plan, and Ellison has publicly said HBO should keep running its own shop.
Until Skydance says something on the record about Harry Potter, this stays in the rumor pile. A cancellation this close to a premiere would be a huge reversal. Still, “insiders say” isn’t the same as confirmed.
We’ll update if Skydance or HBO comments after the deal closes.
