Sam’s Club bakeries have a 30-count tray of Nightmare Before Christmas cupcakes with Jack, Sally and Oogie Boogie toppers for $16.67, which works out to about 56 cents a cupcake.
Sam’s Club has a Halloween party tray for fans of Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, and it’s priced like a warehouse club should be. The new cupcake tray holds 30 cupcakes and costs $16.67, Sporked reported Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Do the math and that’s about 56 cents a cupcake. Sam’s Club’s own listing shows the same $16.67, or $0.56 each, with a note that prices may vary in club and online.
The cupcakes are in clubs now, alongside Sam’s Club’s other Halloween bakery items, and they’re expected to stick around for the next few weeks.
What’s on the Sam’s Club Nightmare Before Christmas cupcakes?
The movie’s three biggest faces. Each tray mixes three designs with purple, green and white frosting, and each cupcake gets a sugar topper of Jack Skellington, Sally or Oogie Boogie.
Under the frosting, it’s an even split: 15 white cupcakes and 15 chocolate, according to Sam’s Club’s listing. The frosting color doesn’t tell you which is which, so it’s a bit of a guessing game.
Sam’s Club says they’re made fresh in the club, and the listing shows them as SNAP EBT eligible.
Do all the cupcakes come with the character toppers?
Some trays come up short. In a video Sporked pointed to from a Sam’s Club food reviewer, a few cupcakes in one tray were missing their sugar toppers.
Sporked’s advice is to shop earlier in the day if the characters matter to you. That’s fair. A plain purple cupcake is fine, but nobody at a Halloween party is fighting over the one without Jack on it.
How long will Sam’s Club sell the Nightmare Before Christmas cupcakes?
There’s no end date. Sporked says the tray joins Sam’s Club’s Halloween Cake Balls and Halloween Cutout Cookies “for the next few weeks.” That likely covers Halloween, though Sam’s Club hasn’t given a date.
You’ll need a Sam’s Club membership to buy in the club. The website showed no shipping, pickup or delivery for the tray at the club we checked, so plan on picking one up in person. Stock can vary by location, so it’s worth checking the Sam’s Club app or calling your club’s bakery before you make the drive.
How does the Sam’s Club tray compare with other Halloween party treats?
It’s one of the cheaper options this month. Krispy Kreme’s three-day Looney Tunes Lab Dozen is $13 for 12 doughnuts, or a little over a dollar each, according to Krispy Kreme.
Dunkin’s Halloween Munchkins bucket doesn’t have an official price this year. Last year it started at $14.69 for 50 Munchkins, The Krazy Coupon Lady reported, but those are donut holes, a much smaller bite than a frosted cupcake.
Why is Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween thing?
Because it works for two holidays at once. Jack is the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown, and the whole plot is him trying to take over Christmas. So it gets to be a Halloween movie and a Christmas movie.
The timing on these cupcakes is good, too. Disney’s official fan club, D23, lists the film’s first release as Oct. 13, 1993, in New York, so the movie turned 33 on Tuesday.
A few more bits of trivia from D23:
Henry Selick directed it, from a story and characters by Tim Burton.
Danny Elfman wrote the music and sang Jack’s songs. Chris Sarandon voiced Jack in the speaking parts.
Catherine O’Hara voiced Sally, and Ken Page voiced Oogie Boogie.
Disney released it under its Touchstone label, and it was made in stop-motion with more than 227 animated characters.
Where else does Disney use The Nightmare Before Christmas?
At the parks, mostly. Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion first got a Nightmare Before Christmas makeover for the 2001 holiday season, D23 says, and it was popular enough to keep coming back.
That overlay, Haunted Mansion Holiday, is running again now and stays up “through the holiday season,” according to Disneyland. This year’s version has an all-new design for the gingerbread house in the ballroom.
Oogie Boogie even has his own party. Oogie Boogie Bash, the after-hours Halloween event at Disney California Adventure, runs on select nights through Oct. 31. For $16.67, the cupcakes are a cheaper way to get Oogie Boogie to your party than a ticket to his.
