The capsule launched exclusively at Target nationwide on August 14, timed to KATSEYE’s new EP dropping the same day. It covers fashion, collectibles, drinkware, and snacks.
Sanrio put its most rebellious character next to one of the biggest pop groups working, and the whole thing landed at Target last week.
The Kuromi x KATSEYE capsule collection launched exclusively at Target stores nationwide on August 14, announced four days earlier.
It arrived the same day as KATSEYE’s EP WILD, which is the entire point of the timing.
What’s in the Kuromi x KATSEYE collection
The capsule runs wider than a typical character collaboration.
Sanrio lists fashion, collectibles, drinkware, and snacks, which puts it across several departments rather than sitting in one aisle.
The design pairs Kuromi’s signature look, the black jester hood and pink skull, with KATSEYE’s visual identity. Sanrio describes it as a celebration of music, fashion, and fandom.
Target has the exclusive, so it is not at Sanrio’s own stores or general retail.
Why Kuromi and not Hello Kitty
The character choice is doing real work here.
Kuromi debuted as My Melody’s rival and has spent the last several years becoming Sanrio’s fastest-growing property outside Hello Kitty, largely with an older teen and adult audience.
She reads punk where Hello Kitty reads sweet, which makes her the obvious fit for a group whose EP is called WILD.
Sanrio has been leaning on her heavily. She anchors the company’s collaborations aimed at people who grew up with Sanrio rather than at small children.
Who KATSEYE are
For anyone whose exposure to the group stops at hearing the name.
KATSEYE is a global girl group formed through a survival competition series, and they are two-time Grammy nominees. The lineup is international rather than exclusively Korean, which is why the group sits slightly outside the traditional K-pop framing while drawing from the same system.
WILD is their new EP, released August 14.
Where to find the Kuromi x KATSEYE collection
Target stores nationwide, in the departments matching each product type rather than in one display.
Sanrio capsule collections at mass retail move quickly, and this one carries a music release date attached to it, which usually compresses the window further.
Sanrio has been running character brands since 1960, with Hello Kitty created in 1974, and now sells in more than 130 countries. Kuromi is the one currently doing the heaviest lifting.
