Savi’s Workshop at Disney World and Disneyland now builds lightsabers with thermal cutting, spinning and deflection effects, plus a white-and-gold take on its Protection and Defense hilt.
The lightsabers at Savi’s Workshop just got a lot fancier.
As of Monday, Oct. 5, every lightsaber built at Savi’s, no matter which hilt you pick, comes with new effects. That’s at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in both Disney World‘s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland, according to the Disney Parks Blog.
There’s also a new look for one of the hilts, with white finishes and gold details.
What are the new lightsaber effects at Savi’s Workshop?
Disney says every build now includes:
a thermal cutting effect
a spinning effect
deflection effects
upgraded audio
smoother blade activation
The effects are built into every saber, so there’s nothing extra to buy for them. Leftover parts from your box go back into Savi’s inventory, so you only keep what you build.
There’s a bonus if you pick a “cracked” kyber crystal. With a flick of your wrist, the blade switches between the light side and the dark side of the Force.
Is Protection and Defense a new Savi’s Workshop hilt?
Not exactly, and some early write-ups got this part wrong.
Protection and Defense is one of the four original Savi’s hilt themes. It’s been around since Galaxy’s Edge opened in 2019.
What’s new is the latest version of it. Disney calls it “the latest series” of the theme, with white finishes, gold detailing and Jedi symbols from the High Republic era, the period of Star Wars history set long before the movies.
WDW News Today calls it version three. It’s the second hilt to get one, after Power and Control got its own update in May.
How much does Savi’s Workshop cost?
$274.99 per lightsaber, plus tax. Full payment is due when you book.
When Galaxy’s Edge opened in 2019, it was $199.99. That’s $75 more now, an increase of about 38 percent.
A few other rules from Disney:
One lightsaber per builder, per experience
A carrying case is included
Builders should be at least 5
Only the builder and one guest go in, and someone in the party has to be 14 or older
No refunds, and no Annual Passholder discounts
What are the four Savi’s Workshop hilt themes?
You pick one of four themes before you start building:
Peace and Justice: salvaged scraps tied to fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships
Power and Control: dark side style, with parts said to come from the Sith homeworld
Elemental Nature: materials like Brylark wood and Cartusion whale bone
Protection and Defense: now in white and gold, with High Republic Jedi touches
What kyber crystal colors can you choose at Savi’s Workshop?
There are four, each tied to a famous owner. Blue is Obi-Wan Kenobi’s, and green is Luke Skywalker’s and Yoda’s.
Violet is Mace Windu’s. Red belongs to Darth Vader, Darth Maul and Asajj Ventress.
The Gatherers attach a 31-inch blade at the end, so plan on carrying something long through the park.
How do you book Savi’s Workshop?
Book ahead. Disney recommends advance reservations at both Disney World and Disneyland.
Galaxy’s Edge opened at Disneyland on May 31, 2019, and at Hollywood Studios on Aug. 29, 2019. Savi’s has been part of the land since day one.
Want to dress it up more? Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, a few steps away, sells extra customization pieces.
If you built a lightsaber years ago, nobody’s making you do it again. But a spinning blade does make a pretty good argument.
