The Disney Channel stars rebuilt the 2009 movie's poster for a Rare Beauty campaign, blue and yellow dresses and all, and named the new blush set after their "Delena" nickname.
Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato are Disney Channel princesses again, at least for a makeup campaign.
The two recreated the poster for Princess Protection Program, the 2009 Disney Channel Original Movie they starred in together, for "Still Making Each Other Blush," a new campaign from Gomez's Rare Beauty that went live Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Gomez's Instagram caption kept it simple: "Once a Princess, always a Princess."
What did Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato recreate?
The poster, first. In the lead photo, the two pose the way they did in 2009, in the same blue and yellow dresses their characters are known for.
Another photo shows them in costume doing their makeup, and a third shows off the new Rare Beauty products. A video goes full 2000s, opening with the "Yo. Yo. Yo." greeting from their old YouTube vlogs and setting them in a teen girl's bedroom with Princess Protection Program set photos taped to the walls.
They lip-sync to the movie's song and dance on a twin bed. At one point Gomez asks, "Who is your best friend?"
What is the Rare Beauty Delena blush set?
It's a set of two Soft Pinch liquid blushes, sold as the Delena Soft Pinch Blush Bundle. The name comes from "Delena," the nickname fans gave the pair years ago.
Lovato called the collaboration "such a full-circle moment," and Gomez wrote "The most special day" in her Instagram Story, tagging her co-star. Gomez also wrote "One and the same...always," a nod to the movie's duet.
What is Princess Protection Program about?
Lovato plays Princess Rosalinda, who has to flee her country after General Magnus Kane takes over in a coup. The secret Princess Protection Program hides her in rural Louisiana, where she poses as Rosie Gonzalez, the cousin of a small-town tomboy named Carter Mason, played by Gomez.
The two start out as anything but friends, which is what makes the poster recreation land. The movie premiered on Disney Channel in 2009, when both stars were at the peak of their Disney Channel years, and its duet, "One and the Same," became a fan favorite.
How long have Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato been friends?
Since they were kids. The two met on Barney & Friends in 2002, then each landed their own Disney Channel show, Gomez on Wizards of Waverly Place and Lovato on Sonny With a Chance, before teaming up for Princess Protection Program.
The friendship hit a rough patch that lasted several years. This spring, Gomez went to one of Lovato's It's Not That Deep Tour concerts, Good Morning America reported, and the campaign puts the reunion front and center.
Where are Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato's Disney Channel shows now?
Both are still part of the Disney family in their own ways. Gomez executive produces Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, the Disney Channel sequel series to Wizards of Waverly Place, and she returned as Alex Russo for it.
Gomez launched Rare Beauty in 2020, and it has become one of the best-known celebrity makeup brands around. Teaming up with her Disney Channel co-star for a blush drop is about as on-brand as it gets.
Will there be a Princess Protection Program sequel?
Nothing has been announced, and the campaign is a Rare Beauty project, not a Disney one. Disney has been revisiting its Disney Channel classics, though. Lovato executive produced and made a cameo in Camp Rock 3, which premiered in August, 16 years after the last Camp Rock movie, and reunited her with the Jonas Brothers.
For now, fans who want the full story can go back to the original. Princess Protection Program is a 2009 Disney Channel Original Movie, and Disney+ is home to much of the Disney Channel movie library.
