A month ago, the train crawled the track at 1 centimeter per second. Now it’s flying, and a support column may have already leaked the ride’s name.
Spider-Man’s first Disney roller coaster is officially moving fast.
Shanghai Disneyland has started full-speed testing on its new Spider-Man-themed coaster, Laughing Place reported Tuesday, Oct. 20. Video shows a train racing through the track, and Disney also shared a photo of Imagineers working next to one of the trains on a launch section.
It’s a big jump from last month. In September, the coaster was going through push-pull testing, when a ride vehicle moves through the course at just 1 centimeter per second. Walt Disney Imagineering called it one of the slowest parts of the whole project.
What is push-pull testing on a roller coaster?
It’s the careful step before the fun step. During push-pull testing, crews slowly move a vehicle along the track with special devices attached to check clearance between the train and nearby theming, walls and equipment.
That makes sure nothing is too close before anyone rides. Once that checks out, the coaster can run on its own at full speed. In Shanghai, the trains are already doing laps with test dummies in the seats, WDW News Today reported.
What is the Spider-Man coaster at Shanghai Disneyland called?
Disney hasn’t announced an official name. But fans spotted “W.E.B. L4UNCH//R” printed on a support column, BlogMickey reported. Disney hasn’t confirmed it.
The name would fit the story. The coaster is part of a new Shanghai branch of the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, or W.E.B., the group Tony Stark founded in the Avengers Campus story.
In this version, Peter Parker and his friends built a team of Spider-Bots to help put together their experiments and build the coaster. Concept art shows a giant Spider-Bot gone wrong, with Spider-Man fighting it.
Where is the Spider-Man land at Shanghai Disneyland?
It will be the park’s ninth themed land, next to Zootopia. Disney calls it the first Disney Parks land dedicated entirely to Spider-Man.
Zootopia opened in December 2023 as the first Zootopia land at any Disney park, so Shanghai has a habit of getting the big firsts.
Imagineers are also working with local artists on more than 20 murals around the land that celebrate science, Spider-Man and the Avengers. The land will have shops, food and entertainment, too.
When does the Shanghai Spider-Man coaster open?
Disney hasn’t announced an opening date. BlogMickey has reported the coaster is believed to open in the second half of 2027.
Here’s how fast things have moved so far:
May 2025: Groundbreaking
September 2025: The first steel column goes up
January 2026: Track installation begins
June 2026: Track installation is complete
September 2026: Push-pull testing
October 2026: Full-speed testing
Why can’t Disney World build a Spider-Man ride?
Because of a deal Marvel signed with Universal in the 1990s. Universal holds the theme park rights to Spider-Man and other Marvel characters in the Orlando area, which is why The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man has been at Islands of Adventure since 1999.
That deal is a big reason you won’t see Spider-Man swinging around Disney World. Out west and overseas, it’s a different story. Disney California Adventure has WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure at Avengers Campus, and Disneyland Paris has its own version too.
Shanghai is taking it a step further with a full coaster and a whole land.
What else is new at Shanghai Disneyland right now?
For Halloween, Pete is meeting guests at Shanghai Disneyland through Nov. 1. Mickey’s longtime rival goes all the way back to Walt Disney’s Alice Comedies, but he only started meeting guests at Disney parks in 2023.
Shanghai Disney Resort also marked its 10th anniversary this year. The resort opened in June 2016.
