Snickers candy canes made by Spangler Candy, the company behind Dum-Dums, turned up at Stop & Shop on Oct. 2. The brown-striped canes come 12 to a box, and nobody’s said how they taste.
Snickers is a candy cane now. A brown one.
Snack spotter Markie Devo posted the find on X on Friday, Oct. 2: “New Snickers Candy Canes! Spotted at Stop and Shop, not exclusive.” He credited the news and the photo to Spangler Candy, the Ohio company that makes Dum-Dums.
The canes come 12 to a 5.3-ounce box, each one wrapped on its own. They’re striped in light and dark brown with a thin red stripe, so they look a little like a Snickers bar that got twisted.
What do Snickers candy canes taste like?
Nobody’s said yet. The front of the box in Markie Devo’s photo just says “12 Candy Canes” under the Snickers logo.
That’s the fun part. A Snickers bar is peanuts, nougat, caramel and milk chocolate.
A candy cane is a stick of hard candy. Something had to give.
Sporked wondered the same thing Tuesday, asking whether it’s Snickers with peppermint or all four Snickers flavors squeezed into a candy stick. When Snackolator first posted about the canes in May, the post mentioned a chocolate and caramel flavor.
Who makes Snickers candy canes?
Spangler Candy, according to Markie Devo’s post. Spangler is based in Bryan, Ohio, and it makes Dum-Dums, Sweethearts, Necco Wafers and a whole lot of candy canes.
Its own website says it makes peppermint and cherry canes “as well as many other flavors under a variety of well-known candy brands.”
Spangler’s online store already sells Starburst lollipops, and Starburst, like Snickers, belongs to Mars. The Snickers canes weren’t listed in that store as of Tuesday, Oct. 6.
The box weight matches Spangler’s, too. Its classic peppermint canes come 12 to a box at 0.44 ounces a cane, which works out to the same 5.3 ounces printed on the Snickers box.
When did Snickers candy canes come out?
They’ve been on the way since at least May. Snackolator posted on May 20 that Snickers candy canes were coming this year.
That was the same week as the Sweets & Snacks Expo in Las Vegas, the big trade show where candy companies preview what’s coming.
The first sighting in an actual store came Oct. 2 at Stop & Shop, the grocery chain in the Northeast. Since Markie Devo called them “not exclusive,” other stores could have them soon.
Are these the same as the Snickers candy cane tube?
They’re a different product. Snickers already sells a Christmas Candy Cane Stocking Stuffer, which is a plastic candy cane-shaped tube filled with Snickers Minis. Kroger and Walmart both list it online.
That one’s chocolate bars in a cane costume. The new one is an actual candy cane that tastes like, well, something Snickers-ish.
Who is Spangler Candy?
A 120-year-old candy company. Arthur G. Spangler started it in Bryan in 1906.
Spangler bought Dum-Dums in 1953, and in 2018 it picked up Necco Wafers and Sweethearts conversation hearts after the New England Confectionery Company went bankrupt.
Spangler has made candy canes since the 1950s, when it bought a candy cane company in 1954. Its website calls them “an important part of the celebration,” right up there with decorating the tree.
So the canes come from people who know candy canes. Whether a Snickers bar belongs in one is something the first person to unwrap one in a Stop & Shop parking lot will get to decide.
