Spider-Man: Brand New Day has passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film in the history of the United States and Canada box office, reaching $936 million unadjusted.
It crossed on its seventh Tuesday in theaters, with $2.45 billion worldwide.
Why Endgame never got here
Brand New Day opened to $360 million domestically, topping Endgame‘s all-time opening record. But Endgame had already proven that a massive debut does not guarantee the finish. It ended its domestic run at $858 million, well short of The Force Awakens.
The Force Awakens got to $936 million by legging out across the 2015 holiday season, the first Star Wars film after a decade-long gap, playing to audiences for months.
Brand New Day opened bigger than Endgame and then held like The Force Awakens. Doing both is what produced the record.
August became the biggest month in box office history
Aside from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Brand New Day was effectively the only major title drawing crowds in August. That combination pushed the month to an all-time high of $1.2 billion in domestic business.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman described the result as beyond what anyone at the studio expected.
“Just think of everything our industry has been through with the pandemic, and then even more so with the strikes. The challenges theaters have faced have been so immense,” Rothman told TheWrap on opening weekend. “’Endgame’ came out in a completely different world. I truly didn’t think we would ever see any film open to $350 million domestic again.”
The reign could be very short
The Force Awakens sat at the top of the domestic chart for more than a decade. Brand New Day may hold it until December.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives December 18, and it has already banked $50 million in presales more than three months out. Its trailer became Disney’s most-watched of all time across social platforms.
There is a real possibility Doomsday opens above $360 million. Holiday releases also tend to leg out better than summer ones, since school breaks and time off extend the window for repeat business.
One factor works against it. Dune: Part Three and other holiday titles will compete for screens, limiting how many showtimes theaters can add to meet demand.
If Doomsday delivers and pulls back lapsed Marvel viewers who checked out over the last few years, it could pass Brand New Day domestically and globally.
The record would move from Sony to Disney.
Spider-Man films are produced and released by Sony, with Marvel Studios co-producing and the character folded into Disney’s cinematic universe. The receipts on this record belong to Sony.
Avengers: Doomsday is a Marvel Studios film, which means Disney. If it takes the record in December, the all-time domestic crown moves between the two companies that share Spider-Man.
Five years of setup paid off
Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed $1.9 billion in 2021 without a Chinese release and during a COVID outbreak, ending with Peter Parker erasing himself from the memory of everyone on Earth, including MJ and Ned.
Brand New Day picks up those consequences, with Peter attempting to rebuild while facing a mind-controlling mutant revealed to be Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink, who Marvel has since confirmed as part of its upcoming X-Men cast.
Word of mouth did the rest.
What comes next
The film is still in theaters and still adding to both totals.
Whether $936 million ends up being the final domestic figure or merely the number where it broke the record depends on how long it holds screens against the fall slate.
Either way, the mark now belongs to a Spider-Man movie, and it has roughly three months before the next contender arrives.
