Square Enix has been building toward Kingdom Hearts' 25th all year
A logo in June, a collection in October, a panel in August, and a game dated for late 2027. Laid end to end, it stops looking like coincidence.
The pieces have been arriving in order since June, and Friday night finished the shape.
Kingdom Hearts turns 25 in March 2027. Square Enix and Disney have spent 2026 putting a runway in front of that date, and most of the individual announcements landed without anyone connecting them.
Here’s the sequence.
June 9: the logo and the trailer
Square Enix revealed a 25th anniversary logo for the franchise.
The same day, a Kingdom Hearts IV gameplay trailer ran during a Nintendo Direct, the first substantial footage since the game’s 2022 reveal. It confirmed Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Also that day: pre-orders opened for a collection, a free demo appeared on Switch 2, and the older Switch cloud versions were delisted.
October 8: the on-ramp
Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] bundles the existing saga.
It contains Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III with the Re Mind DLC. All native rather than cloud-streamed, on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
That’s the entire narrative on current hardware, sold fourteen months before the anniversary.
August 15: the panel
Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts runs Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Pacific, streaming free on Disney’s YouTube channel.
It’s billed as a 25th anniversary celebration, held roughly seven months before the anniversary, with the co-director of Kingdom Hearts IV and both lead voice actors on stage.
Late 2027: the game
Friday night, Disney dated Kingdom Hearts IV for the back half of 2027.
That places it inside the anniversary year, after the March date rather than on it. Which is the sensible construction. Hitting an anniversary day with a game this size is how release dates slip in public.
What the runway is actually for
Getting people ready to buy a game.
A franchise that went four years without a release window has a collection landing in October, a livestreamed panel in August, an animated series announced Friday, and a Pixar world confirmed for the sequel.
Someone who has never played Kingdom Hearts can buy the entire story in October and finish it well before late 2027. That’s not an accident, and it’s the most coherent the franchise’s release strategy has looked in a decade.
