Tetsuya Nomura told Famitsu the role became necessary once outside collaborators joined the franchise. The person came from the mobile game team, and the entire back catalog gets re-released Oct. 8.
Square Enix did not hire a Kingdom Hearts loremaster because its own developers were lost.
It hired one because Disney’s newly announced anime series brought in people who were.
Series director Tetsuya Nomura explained the reasoning in an interview with Famitsu, published in late August.
What Tetsuya Nomura actually said about the loremaster
His explanation is specific about what triggered it.
“As the Kingdom Hearts series has continued, the number of characters has inevitably increased, and the story has become more complex,” Nomura told Famitsu.
“For example, with the newly announced anime series, the number of external people involved in the Kingdom Hearts series has increased, and explaining the settings and scenarios each time has become quite difficult.”
The problem was not internal confusion. It was the cost of briefing outsiders, repeatedly, on a story that takes hours to summarize.
Where the Kingdom Hearts loremaster came from
The person was already on staff, working on a different part of the franchise.
Nomura said the team behind the “χ series,” the browser and mobile branch of Kingdom Hearts, included someone who had meticulously compiled and organized the settings of past entries in an accessible form.
That work turned into a formal role. The loremaster now functions as a proofreader for continuity, catching contradictions and helping collaborators understand what is happening.
The χ series is among the most convoluted corners of a famously convoluted franchise, which makes it a logical place to find someone with the notes already written.
Why Kingdom Hearts needed this
The scale explains itself once you lay it out.
Kingdom Hearts launched in 2002 as a crossover between Disney worlds and Final Fantasy elements, following Sora alongside Donald Duck and Goofy.
More than a dozen entries followed across nearly every console generation and several handhelds, with numbered sequels, side stories, mobile games and remasters whose titles rarely indicate chronological order.
Characters have hearts, Nobodies, Heartless and replicas. Time travel is involved. Multiple versions of the same person exist simultaneously.
Nomura has directed or overseen all of it since the beginning.
The Kingdom Hearts anime is coming to Disney Channel and Disney+
The project that created the need is still light on detail.
Disney announced at D23 that an original Kingdom Hearts anime series is in development for both Disney Channel and Disney+, made in collaboration with Nomura and the Square Enix creative team.
No release window, episode count, studio or creative team has been announced.
Putting it on Disney Channel alongside Disney+ points at a broad family audience, which raises a fair question about how a story this dense reaches viewers who have never touched the games. A loremaster starts looking less like an internal curiosity and more like infrastructure.
Kingdom Hearts IV arrives in late 2027
The game the loremaster is currently supporting has a window.
Square Enix and Disney & Pixar Games confirmed at D23 that Kingdom Hearts IV releases in late 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Coco was revealed as its first confirmed Disney world, with Sora appearing alongside Miguel and Héctor. Mickey Mouse, Donald and Goofy are playable as they search for Sora.
Nomura and co-director Tai Yasue have both publicly ruled out a delay.
You can catch up starting Oct. 8
For anyone who wants to understand the story without hiring their own loremaster, there is a route.
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix is listed for native releases on Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on Oct. 8, 2026, alongside a native Nintendo Switch version replacing the cloud-based edition.
That collection covers the earliest entries, which is where the continuity actually starts making sense.
Editor’s note: Pirates & Princesses covered the loremaster hiring earlier this week without a source citation for Nomura’s comments. Those remarks come from Famitsu, and the fuller quotes clarify that the anime production prompted the role. This article updates that reporting.
