Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu hits digital today
Din Djarin and Grogu land on digital platforms Tuesday, July 21, about two months after hitting theaters. It’s the first Star Wars movie since 2019, and also the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film ever.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is available to buy or rent on digital platforms starting today, Tuesday, July 21. It went live at midnight Eastern, so West Coast fans could grab it as early as 9 p.m. Pacific last night.
You can find it on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, among others. Expect to pay around $29.99 to own it or $24.99 to rent, though the price shifts a little depending on the platform.
What The Mandalorian and Grogu is about
If you’ve been following along on Disney+, you know the setup. If not, here’s the quick version.
The movie picks up the story of the hit series The Mandalorian, following bounty hunter Din Djarin and his little green Force-sensitive sidekick Grogu (you know him as Baby Yoda) as they help the New Republic. The mission this time is rescuing Rotta the Hutt, son of Jabba.
Jon Favreau directed and co-wrote it with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. Favreau and Filoni are the two brains behind pretty much everything good in this corner of Star Wars, so the movie’s in familiar hands.
It’s also a bit of a milestone. This was the first new Star Wars movie in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019, ending a six-year gap on the big screen.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie
Here’s the number that raised eyebrows. The movie made about $342.2 million worldwide.
For most franchises that’s a fine haul. For Star Wars, it’s the lowest a live-action theatrical release has ever pulled in. Ending a six-year absence and coming in at the bottom of the live-action list at the same time is a weird combination.
The audience liked it more than the critics did, which tracks with a lot of recent Star Wars. It’s sitting at a 60% critics score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans showed up for it, even if reviewers were split.
Whether the soft box office says something about theatrical Star Wars or just about this particular movie is the kind of thing people will argue about for a while. Din and Grogu carried a series just fine. The theater math turned out different.
When The Mandalorian and Grogu comes to Disney+ and Blu-ray
If you’d rather not pay 30 bucks to own a digital copy, you’ve got options coming.
A 4K Ultra HD physical release is set for late August, with Blu-ray and DVD editions expected to follow. Good news for the disc collectors, given how much noise there’s been lately about physical media disappearing.
The one date still missing is the big one for most fans: Disney+. A streaming date hasn’t been announced yet. So if you want it now, today’s digital release is the only way in, and if you’re patient, it’ll land on the service you’re probably already paying for eventually.
Grab it now or hold out for Disney+. Either way, Grogu’s not going anywhere.
